Fanboys aside, how is this game?
It looks pretty cool.

I played Turok 1 and 2 on N64 and although they were fun, the levels lasted an eternity and 2 especially was really easy to get lost and feel fatiguing in the maze design.

Nightdive fixed some of that with waypoints which I'll definitely use for 3.

Now that we're getting sharper textures, improved lighting and non-bogged-down frame rate, how is the game itself?

A lot more linear than Turok 2 so you'll likely not run into that issue. But also a bit weirder (like the first level boss is comically awkward to look at), feeling a lot more disjointed and like a confused mess of ideas, some of which work better than others. Generally 'more of the same' but from what I know people rank this one below 1 and 2 in terms of quality. Still good if you liked what the first 2 games had to offer, I'd say. They compromised on game length in favor of some replayability due to two separate main character that take slightly different routes through the game and get to use 50% individual weapons each. They tried to do more with the story than the other games but that too didn't really stick the landing imo, pretty tropey and predictable.

The N64 version in particular was plagued by technical issues that dragged down the entire experience and tanked ratings, such as criminally awful frame rates and input lag. With these out of the way I'm expecting the game to actually feel a lot better than people remember it.

Not as good as 3. Its a jumbled mess of awesome ideas... that don't always go well togeather. It abandons 1 & 2's trademark nonlinear objective based hub & spoke structure for an easier and faster to make Linear design. The story is really cool though... with reality itself is literally unraveling causing, time and space collapsing in upon itself.

Thanks!

And how's the gunplay compared to 1 & 2? I had a good time blasting humans in the first one with the explosive shotgun and blood trails while they ragdoll until disappearing. They felt like mini fatalities.

Having played both I’m cool with linear Turok 2 is an absolute chore to playthrough uninstalled once I finished. Turok 1 was cool.

Yeah i never finished turok 2 on the n64 back in the day and will never finish it now.

Its super fun to play especially with cheats and just killing stuff but a legit playthtrough is hell.

Turok 3 might be the first i actually finish.

It's the SiN of mediocre N64 shooters, but in fairness the remaster looks like it gives it a huge boost

TL:DR It's a decent enough Half Life clone. It seems like more of a moment in time thing though, giving N64 players the opportunity to have a similar experience to PC gamers.

I haven't played this remaster yet, but based on playing them all back in the N64 days this one is a departure from the first two games, which was disappointing to me. I love how Turok 1 + 2 feel like an advancement of the formula of the original Doom/Wolfenstein

Turok 3 plays more like an imitation Half Life and does pretty well. At the time it definitely gave console gamers who didn't have access to a gaming PC a way to scratch that itch.

Its much more linear then it's predecessors and a bit less gameplay since some of the runtime is padded out by cutscenes. I have to admit that I pretty much always hate stories in video games, but I remember this one having some funny campy moments

Also, I remember having a lot of fun with the multiplayer in this game but it doesn't seem like that was brought over in the remaster?

The main reason it got a way too big backlash (in my opinion) back then was because it drifted away from Turok 1 and 2. While I can understand if fans are disappointed because they don't get what they expect or wish for, it seems unfair to criticize the game only for that.

Sure, the game has some flaws here and there if you ask different people, most games do. but not something major in my view. My personal only "big" negative about Turok 3 is the last chapter regarding the way too big explosion radius of the enemy grenades (I hope Nightdive did something here). Beside that, I love this game, it belongs to my childhood and objectively it's a good game. Think of it as Half-Life 1 for N64 with Turok vibes. I think, that describes it really good.

The first Turok's gore effects blow 2 & 3 out of the water. It looks so ahead of its time and I wish there was a way I could transfer them over to the other games. Even just the blood

I had never played Turok 3 before now. I love this remaster. I own Turok 1 and 2 as well. They are all great. Nightdive outdid themselves on this one. There’s not much else to say.

It is really similar to Half Life, if you like Half life you will like it
The question is misguided, most folks are "enjoying" these boomer shooters ironically.
