Gun fire near end?

Near the end of the game, I was heading to the crow statue when a few bullets wizzed by my head. I ran to the park entrance expecting to find soldiers or something storming the park, but there was nothing. Anyone else run into this? Did my game glitch or what?

I noticed, too. I was running to the giant crow and I thought an arrow whizzed by.

That'd make sense. Seems like there should have been a shadowy figure running away or something. Instead it's just random bullets that Mara doesn't even comment on when up until then no one has shot at her.

I wanna know if anyones worked out the mystery with the roots? If you cut them it marks them as cut on your map. Why?
