Freeware AFS4 planes
Someone pointed this out on the ipacs forum. Kristoff has converted some of his AFS2 planes into AFS4 format. About 12 or so over there waiting for you on Github. :steamhappy:

Any idea how/where to install them? I extracted the zip contents in the aircraft folder but they don't show up in the sim.

That is to say the aircraft folder under the documents folder (which worked under AFS2).

Edit the file name to exclude - master and they should show up then.

They show up but if I load the plane I just see a red "STOP"-cube...
Update: Some planes work...

Mr Kaniewski's planes, both FS 2 (marked as public archive) and FS 4 versions, have always been a work in progress. The only ones I have used that seem to be complete are the Piper Cub and the Ercoupe 415.

You need to unzip the download file in you Drive:\user\user_name\Documents\Aerofly FS 4\ folder (windows os) and edit the folder name to remove the "-master" that was tacked on after the aircraft name.

Although you cannot alter the 3D graphics, you can edit the aircraft.tmd file if you want to change how it flies. There is an Aerofly FS 2 wiki that has some info on it.
Here is a list of the relevant wiki links if you want to do this

Once you have opened the particular aircraft repository web page (ie krzysk1/wilga) you will see a list of files in the aircraft master branch window. On the right side will be a green button labeled "<>Code". Click on it and it will expand a submenu where you should click on the "Download ZIP" menu command. That will initiate a download of the zip of the files stored in "aircraftname-master" labeled folder, (eg. wilga-master.zip). Unzip in the correct location as mentioned in prior comment and rename to just aircraftname (ig. wilga) folder. Then it will show up in the aircraft list in Aerofly FS 4.

When first time using Mr. Kaniewski's aircraft, I highly recommend test flying in a wide open space, like KEDW (Edwards AFB, CA, USA) so in case things get a little wild you don't run into a mountain. Since a lot of the time the cockpit instruments may not be fully implemented I position the camera view to a tail chase position outside the aircraft and use the "I" key shortcut to see the flight data ribbon display. Once I am comfortable with how the aircraft flies then I switch back to the in-cockpit camera view.

Make sure you are using only FS 4 aircraft versions as the FS2 version will not work in FS 4.
The repository description will say FS 4 otherwise it's FS 2.

When I unzip a plane file suich as the Wilga, I find that there is a folder called Wilga - Master and inside that there is another folder called Wilga - Master. It is that second nested folder that you need to move to your documents folder and to rename it and delete the - Master of the name. Then you should just have a folder called Wilga and it should work fine in your game.

Kaniewski's Stearman Model 75 Kaydet has a couple of glaring issues:
a) you cannot manually start it even if you assign shortcut keys for magneto switch positions and engine start.
b) Even if you start ready for takeoff, the engine stops and the engine panels open up.
There is no solution for a).
To fix the takeoff, landing, and clean inflight starts so that the engine is running correctly (both magnetos in use and engine is running) you can down load the corrected presets files and sub them for the existing ones in the stearman folder you got from github.
Also if you want a easier to fly, but maybe not accurate except for 83 knot cruise speed sub the stearman.tmd file from here in for the one in the stearman folder you downloaded from github.

Mr. Kaniewski's PA-38 Tomahawk is not a finished aircraft model (cockpit not 100% implemented) and has a few bugs (constant sideslip, incorrect gyrocompass, open door).
However you can substitute a patched version of the tomahawk.tmd file for the one in the tomahawk folder that fixes the sideslip and open door issue. This also has a more realistic cruise speed.
