Am I missing something or is heartwood just an absolute nightmare to harvest? My woodcutting is 25+ and I'm using the iron chopping axe, but I can spend over half an hour in the forest filling my inventory with sapwood (or until my axe wears out, whichever comes first) and barely end up with 50 HW - which inevitably gets wasted in processing until I grind my carpentry up.

Is it just a particularly vicious RNG or is there a trick for getting a decent return? I can spend 20 swings felling the biggest tree in the forest, then another 20 chopping it up, for a grand return of 40 sapwood, then turn to the sapling next to it, harvest that entirely in 8 swings, and get 11 HW - then not see any more HW for ten minutes. It's rapidly becoming the most frustrating thing about this game.

Try different trees in different biomes. Some little trees always give 4 heartwood, and 2 days ago i found these nice trees in a biome outside the valley that always give 19 heartwood, best feeling ever.

try to get the wrought iron axe and chop the bigger trees with the rough bark, youll get 40-50 heartwood and sometimes 60-80 sap wood. always try to chop the biggest trees you see youll have better change of getting heartwood .youll be overflowing with heartwood in no time . even with the iron axe always go for the biggest trees you can.

You need the wrought iron axe. Then you can chop trees that give heartwood all the time. Work on getting your blacksmithing and weaponsmithing skills up to about 15 (or close to that).

Get tier 2 woodcuter axe. You'll find plenty heartwoods on trees near the stone (not alpine trees nor dead trees, the sane forest trees).
