How big would the sh*itstorm have been?
They know they dont really have anything of value. Its a typical Unreal Engine Tech Demo, with the same problems every Unreal Engine MMO has.
And of course the promised some mystical 8000 players per server technology and couldnt deliver at all.
Why should you even develop this game, if you would have this technology? You could make way more money selling it as an enginge, then you could ever make with this game.
Using subscription fees is actually smart in this case.
Knowing the quick buck you made releasing is probably the only money you will get, you probably dont want to keep the servers running forever. But shutting down access to a game you released and sold not so long ago, could be interpreted as fraud, if you dont compensate you customers.
But loosing all you customers due to high subscription fees and then beeing forced to shut down because of low player numbers... Totally different.
Sure you can get games for 5 Dollar and play it even longer, but if you have really fun 80 Cents is not to bad and if you really like it you will play much longer.
So I do not see a real cash grab here, you get what was advertised and all know/knew what the payment is/was for. There where enough videos and such.
Doesnt make it any less of a cashgrab
atleast it was good for the company, having customers pay 80 cents pr hour to test their game for them
