Glad to hear it's subscription.
I'm a old school gamer from the early days of apple 2E and the like.
The first mmorpg I played was EQ shortly after launch and it is still my favorite mmo of all time when I look back.
I've been interested in Pax since I found out about it and am looking forward to a truly open world sandbox game where the players do and make up everything.
My biggest worry was of course the influx of gamers who love to make accounts/alt accounts just to sell gold,or items, or buffs, or hax, or that just like to ruin other gamers fun by trolling.
I've always preferred subscription games because it does a great job of keeping alot of these troll people out of games. The best player communities I've been a part of have all been subscription based which means the people playing have a real stake in the game and not just making a free account to ruin others days.
Subscription also lets the game development go on without trying to sell me loot boxes or power ups that let people with unlimited income rule the game within a few weeks.
I've played so many great mmos in the past that went from subscription to f2p and the game immediately became full of garbage people who did nothing but complain and cry and ruin the game within a few months.
Can't wait to play this game and pay my subscription!!.

I started with MUDS and INFO COM in the 80's.. then came Ultima Online which I think was the very first subscription based mmorpg (95) and it was fabulous. Asherons Call (which was my all time favorite) and EQ came in 99 and both of them were amazing and hellofa lot of fun. Those 3 games had strong PVP platforms and were better than ANYTHING developed since (except for maybe Darkfall) and all were subscription based. I didn't mind one bit paying every month (for all 3) because the games were updated constantly. I had a guild of 3k people in Asherons and I was SMALL compared to guilds like BLOOD and MOONXL who had over 10k people in theirs. Now days, people think a guild of 400 is a lot and I laugh. All those games died from chinese hackers (just like now only Russians have climbed aboard the cheating train) and from chinese gold farmers. If I had my own game, I would never allow any Chinese or Russian ISPs to play. That being said, I totally agree with you and I too am glad it will be subscription based. (You may want to check out Pantheon Rise of the Fallen as it is suppose to be old school similar to EQ and Asherons. I supported that project years ago and it's FINALLY heading to beta starting this month.)

Has there been an official announcement that I missed? Last I heard they haven't publicly said what they were going to do.

I don't mind if it's a sub game but if it's too much, cough, Eve Online, cough, then I'll probably not play it.

I still look for anything developed by Turbine just because of Asherons Call. What ever happened to Turbine? Oh yea, they went on to make Lord Of The Rings Online.

Likewise I started early in the 80's as a pre-teen and have played a fair number of games along the way. And would agree that subscription games have offered the best experience. I would call out Star Wars Galaxies.

Look at every example of every MMO that has gone from sub to ftp. OP your are correct.

SWG was amazing. I only had dial up at the time so big crowds could cause some problems but the game was just amazing to play.
I've played many games that went f2p and they became hot garbage in a few months. Meanwhile 20+ year old sub games are still going.

DAoC was the first mmo that I played a few months after it came out. It had subs and still had no shortage of Gold Sellers even back then. The next game that I played was WoW and there were probably enough gold sellers on that one to fill several servers. You will never keep Gold Sellers out by charging a sub, you will only keep people from playing that don't feel like paying subs. These days that's a lot of people.

I thought they said that it would likely be a sub to claim and build. That would be the only reason that I'd like there to be a sub.

I feel the same, Doomed! The games we played for years , not months, had subscriptions. Don't mind it at all, especially if, as you mentioned, it keeps out the trolls/griefers/farmers that are such a big part of the 'free' games without a monthly sub. The last Alpha for PxD was so much fun...EA is still promised for Spring. Can't wait!!!

Heya ol' friend!! It's SOooo much fun!! You can definitely get to stockpiling hides and selling them from your little hunting cabin with a view; everything uses them. Heck, I'll buy 'em with trade goods from our little village. If we end up on the same shard and you're into ranged, I can set you up with pretty much anything you need from my little fletching station :steamhappy: . Had guys/gals in the clan doing everything from armor, to weapons, to alchemy & cooking...

Send me a PM here when you get a chance! I'll have to go look to see if I still have your Discord info....

People complain, but you have to monetize your game to, well, make a living. You can charge a high up front price and hope that piracy doesn't eat 80% of that, globally ( it will ), you can try to go the lootbox route, NFTs, or several other methods that create a massive imbalance between the whales and the rest of the groups (especially in a MMO with clans and the like), create a gold based economy like World of Tanks that you enforce my making it as grindy as possible, or you just charge a fee. WoW does this, EVE Online does this, and many others. Play for a month, play for a year - your choice. Everyone is even and has the same chance.

That sounds awesome. We will have to coordinate our server then so we end up on the same one for sure. Let me know when you're on next or PM me in discord to see if you're still on my server.
Can't wait to work together.

PM via Steam sent sir! I think you cleaned up your Discord; I don't see it there anymore. I sent you my info as well. Would be great to see you in the chat at least as a guest, about designing the walls and layout of the village (we have several allied clans involved).

I wonder if the only time a subscription will come into play is when you're wanting to build in the world. I'm looking forward to learning more about what model they're aiming for...if it's, "Pay a subscription fee in order to have access to plots and persistent player-made buildings in the game", well...that's kind of a major point of having such a world --> we get to change it and mold it as we mature in the regions/provinces in which we've chosen to live.

One of my friends was kinda whining about paying a monthly sub. I just pointed to the Starbucks he was holding and shrugged :steammocking: .

We are under tornado watches right now and my wife is freaking out so I won't have my PC on till morning it seems lol.
I'll get you a invite tomorrow bud.

It will be interesting to see how the sub model goes. I'm ok with whatever direction it goes as long as the game is good and holds my attention.

I didn't know the game was out already.
Where can I get it so it can be 501?

Only if I get to be number 502 playing! That last alpha had 100k invites sent. People were EVERYWHERE on the Eastern Part of the map where we were at on that second shard. It was really cool to see the enthusiasm and chat going on!

Since there wasn't salvage in the game yet to recover raw materials, I was handing out goodies as I ground up fletching to anyone that needed them; that totaled at least a hundred or so in our neighborhood. Those other 400 were probably scattered around somewhere in that huge world Mainframe made :steammocking: .
