The Settlers: Rise of an Empire Gold Edition

Need some help regarding video/graphics settings
Hi,

I've seen that someone has already posted a similar topic to this regarding graphics settings and that it requires 70mb to run the game on startup. The end result seemed to be that they needed a new video card or update as they didnt have enogth mb for it to run wheereas I do. I meet all minimum and reccomended requirements for the game. I've checked this both manually and on a site called http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri so I'm fully aware my pc has no performance issues with the game. I also have a friend witht the same pc, the only difference being he has windows 7 where as i have windows 8.1 and his is a lower spec computer. So i know the only thing wrong is the os. I think thats it anway :P

Problem i get: black screen then message popsup saying you have 63mb and 70mb is required

My specs checked that it can run the game:

It works on Win 7 fine. No problems with retail version. I think on here the game is only patch to 1.6 instead of 1.7. I put it on a mates lappy with a GT 330 very weak but it ran. So you gear isn't the problem.
Though they do have a disclaimer on the retail box that it does not work with all laptop chipsets.
Buyer beware type of thing but that's all after the fact. You have the game and it needs to work.

I put my best guess for a solution on this thread.

Thanks, I was able to solve my problem accidently, I use a nvidia graphics card but it turns out that the intel was running as default for graphics so i went to nivida control panel and changed that game to run on high performance graphics and now im playing it all the time :)

How were you able to do this? When I disable Intel the problem escalates. It says I need 72 mb and I only have 56mb but when I enable it again the original error pops up. NVIDIA will not detect any of my Steam games except for Skyrim, but yours was able to detect Settlers?

I have soemthing called the 'NVIDIA geforce experience' installed which checks my games, the settlers didn't come up so i right clicked on desktop and clicking in nivdia control panel (something like that) clciked browse and manually found the game and switched settings to high performance. Don't touch the intel graphics settings, no need. hope this helps

I was able to set my NVIDIA Processor to the main GPU from this menu and now the game works. Just needs a lot of point-and-clicking! Thanks for leading me in the right direction.

Also go in Documents\THE SETTLERS - Rise of an Empire\Config open Options.ini and make sure the refresh rate is set to your monitor.
Mine was set to 75 by default. It seems the game engine doesn't detect monitors correctly.
75hz for 1024x768 and 1280x1024 was most common when this game came out.

I set mine to 60hz and it feels a lot smoother.
