are there any custom maps that i can download from the internet or something,or maybe a map editor to make my own

There is a map editor inside the game directories. It will not edit the campaign maps as far as I can tell. But you can make new maps. Look for the directory extra1/bin

as i remember custom maps the ai did nothing does this still happen ?

There are different sites where you can download custom maps done by different persons.
For example Settlermaps.com for english maps.
as it is a german game, there a really a lot german maps online for example on siedelwood.de
