Decent 13

It took me about 46 runs from decent 0-13. A lot of these modifiers are absolutely wretched which makes me feel like decent difficulties 0-3 are easy mode, 4-7 is normal mode and 8-13 is just pain. I usually avoided spell charge depletion, dice deletion and having my life obliterated by giving them scalin...

The response to SpellRogue’s 1.0 launch has been incredible - thank you all for the support, bug reports, and feedback. It's been awesome seeing how much fun you're having with the game (we're having just as much fun watching and playing too).

That said, we’re committed to keeping SpellRogue polished and fun, and we’re actively addressing feedback as more players dive in. Today’s update is a mix of bug fixes, early balance passes, and some handy quality of life tweaks, many of which came directly from your discussions in the SpellRogue Discord[discord.gg] and elsewhere.

Balance Changes

To start, we’ve identified a few normal encounters that were too challenging. These include the Dread Treant, Wrath Voidling (the frenzy doggo from Act 4), Desert Golem, the Crones, and the humble Corrupt Friar (our small mushroom priest) and more.

As many of you pointed out, the Spell Mirror status effect was causing more frustration than fun, especially for builds that rely on big, single-target spells.

We’ve reworked it so that Spell Mirror now wears off at the end of the turn, giving you the chance to either wait it out or use a smaller spell to clear it. This should reduce the feel-bad moments while keeping the mechanic strategically interesting. Related Mutators have been adjusted to reflect the change.

On the player side, we’re focusing on buffing underperforming spells and items, particularly within some of the weaker Spellsets. Signature dice manipulation spells like Gust, Mana Purification, and Mana Splinter have all gotten an extra Charge for the added flexibility. Other Spellset’s such as the first Air set that includes Electrolyze has also received some light buffs, in the form of a buff to the attack spell Zap and the often taken starter artifact that grants Static every third turn.

Some spells have gotten more charges, adjusted values or are now easier to cast.

Of course, we have also taken a pass on many more regular spells (particularly Air spells), which you can check out in the full balance changelog at the end of this post.

Quality of Life improvements

We’ve also included some helpful Quality of Life improvements, such as adding tooltips in spots where players were often looking for more information. The Disenchant button now also behaves differently by default. After disenchanting a spell, the button will automatically disable itself. This change helps prevent accidentally disenchanting the new spell you were trying to place in the now-empty slot, which was a mistake we saw happen quite a bit.

If you prefer the original behavior, where Disenchant remains active, you can disable “Safe Disenchant” in the Interface options menu.

Thoughts on difficulty in accessing Act 4

We've seen some discussion around Act 4 feeling tough to reach, and we wanted to clarify our intent a bit.

The True Ending is meant to be a major challenge, and we recommend trying it first on lower Descent levels. High Descent runs are designed for players chasing extreme difficulty, so consistently reaching and beating Act 4 at those levels isn’t expected.

That said, this is something we’ll keep an eye on as more of you hit the endgame content. If it turns out the curve feels off, we’re open to revisiting things.

Enjoying 1.0?

I'm having a hard time reajusting to this patch, pre patch i usually had no problem beating difficult 4, but now i struggle to even beat difficullty 0, the new hero feels really underwhelming and i've only manage to beat act 3 once out of ~10 games whit her due to not having enough sheilds or damage to push through. If she runs into the dijiin you might aswell quit the run becase it means game over every time. Other games when they make a new hero playable it's overpowerd when it releases, this game did a...

FOR MORE CARD AND BOARD GAMES FOLLOW US CARD GAME KING

Simply put, this is one of the best dice based roguelikes I've ever played (up there with Astrea). It has great gameplay, but it's also great at keeping you awake until 2AM still going "just one more battle"

To briefly explain the game mechanics: Dice are rolled at the start of each turn which are used to cast spells that require certain values or a total number of pips spent to cast. The spells are usually attacks, defense and some dice manipulation along with buffs and debuffs. It sounds simple on paper but simple, it is not - there are many meaningful choices to make at every step. What dice to play, which spells to draft and cast, what route to take, what items to buy - all of that feeds into a satisfying gameplay loop where every decision has an impact.

It's very tactical and easy to get lost in thought while optimizing on how to best manage dice for the turn. While there is RNG in the game it is very controlled and it never felt frustrating even after 100s of dice rolls.

Content wise, there are 4 heroes, each with their own set of spells and significantly different playstyles. Together with items and spell upgrades there are always new things to try, even after a dozen of runs.

Enemies have interesting abilities that are not frustrating to battle against. However, while there is very good enemy variety, with just 2 bosses per act (6 in total without the true boss) the boss variety just isn't there unfortunately..

Finally, the difficulty of the game feels challenging but fair. Although I have two complaints here: At higher difficulties not getting a choice of the spell you need makes a run significantly harder. The second complaint is that getting to the true boss feels a bit too punishing, especially at higher difficulty levels where mutators can cripple you badly. Needing to skip both a rest and an upgrade can be too much.

All in all, Spell Rogue is a must play for turn-based fans that like a tactically dice powered challenge.

The positive

+ Excellent gameplay that feels tactical and every decision meaningful.

+ RNG isn't as much of an issue even though there are dice in the game.

+ Good amount of content and strategies available.

+ Interesting and non-frustrating enemy design.

+ Heroes feel distinct from each other

The neutral

* Could use more balance updates, like buffing certain spells and adjusting some difficulty levers

* Upgrading spells is fun, but upgrade resources are very rare

The negative

- Only 2 bosses per act means you will be seeing the same bosses over and over again

- True boss path could be more accessible on higher difficulties.

Conclusion:

Excellent dice fueled tactical combat where every dice placement matters. It has lots of content while being challenging to even hardcore players. Royally approved.

This game is super fun, but the down side is imo it feels way to easy. I played the demo and even wish listed it and bought it the day the game came out. I only have 6 hours in the game but have beat the whole game with all of the characters. It does not take much to make 1 hero super OP by the end of the 2nd arc. The flame hero you can build to just 1 tap everything on turn 1. The water hero can get like 100 shield and just never take damage as you loop through damaging spells. Earth is kinda the same way pretty much just never really taking damage. The lighting hero was kinda of funky feeling with the shifting cards and stuff. I honestly ignored that and just went with cards and relics that would let me reroll die in order to just stack static and end my turn dealing like 50 damage every round. To show you how busted the water guy skills are I got an event that let me pick any card from 1 of the element heros. I picked water and chose to get def equall to 5X how many enemies i was facing. That being said i could put a 4-6 in the socket and get off the bat 15 shield. The build i had could easily let me have like 8 dice at a time. so putting a low 4 was legit zero prob and i never really had to worry about damage. I REALLY love this game along with slay the spire, but it just feels like a bit of a to easy time to clear through each stage. Either focus straight Def and widdle, or MAX out attack each turn to just not let them do damage to you. Devs if you see this I just want you to know the game is amazing BUT i just wish the hardness was bumped up a tad. I just feel like a god most of the times I do a run.

The best part of any deck builders are synergies. And by golly the synergies in this game are very nice. It's easier than other rogue like deck builders to find a nice synergy without being too easy and boring. Some of this chain reactions you can pull in this game are very gratifying, which is what you want from a rogue like deck builder. I recommend at full price or sale.

Azar Wounded strategy pointess in 1.0.0?

Wounded does not go through armor now. (the game is lacking armor pierce effect badly at the moment - infinite armor stacking is the universal way to win against anything). Vitality does dmg loss reduction instead of healing back. (Why would someone even play this ritual now?) At least, the Vitality effect really needs a rebalance - it can be played once per 3 turns and stays for 1 turn only :D It should be something meaningful and game changing... Cloud Save doesn't seem to work

Hello Although cloud save it activated and seems to sync correctly when closing the game, if I launch the game on Steam Deck, play, then close it. And then come back to my desktop PC and launch the game, nothing carries over. It is like I am playing two separate games. Please can this be resolved? It would be appreciated!...

Hot take: Sefyra is a lot of fun because she sucks

The other characters are fun in their own way, don't get me wrong, but they can kill everything VERY quickly. So quickly that you don't get to enjoy enemy gimmicks very much. It doesn't matter what the eldritch abomination is trying to do if it's already dead. IMO this goes to show that while the descent system is interesting, more levels should just bump up enemy attributes to the point where you can't instantly vaporize them....
