Devlog - April 14, 2024

This week I have been working on the demo. It will include the tutorial that allows you to try out the game after the tutorial.
Corruption will be an important theme in the game. Corruption occurs when your forum gets bigger. This means more officials working in the city. This means that if, for example, a building costs 10 denari per week and the corruption is 25%, then the building will cost 12.5 denari. There is also another factor. If the building is built far away from the forum, corruption will also increase, as the workers will not feel very supervised. Therefore, the costs can quickly explode.
Until now, you were able to set a character trait at the start of the game. If you selected a character trait that reduces corruption, you were able to reduce corruption. When testing the balancing, however, I realized that it's annoying if you can't actively reduce it during the course of the game. But I added another basilica next to the one that already exists in the game. The basilicas then reduce the corruption somewhat.
Otherwise, as always, various bugs have been fixed and the balancing optimized.

Devlog - April 21, 2024

This week I tried to improve the loading performance. Especially loading new maps.
It takes about 1 minute to get from the world map to the city map. Here I was able to save around 10 seconds of loading time. If you then return to the world map and want to build another city, the loading process only takes about 20 seconds because everything is in RAM. I'm trying to reduce the loading times again next week.
One of the last features for the final game was added:
In a city on the world map, a Roman tuning company offers options for your roman travel wagon. You are able to mount better wheels on your wagon to travel faster or decorate the wagon with the finest leather or gold fittings.
Since optimizing the loading times took a lot of time, I can't report much new.

Devlog - April 28, 2024

This week I finished the demo. Some UI elements were optimized, the texts were refined and everything was made a bit friendlier.
I was also able to reduce the size of the demo by around 5GB. This means you don't have to download a huge amount. At the same time I recreated the Alps on the world map. This is the fourth attemp 😄 I took a relief map and recreated the most important valleys. Next up are the Pyrenees - the mountain range between France and Spain.
Other than that, only a number of bugs have been fixed. No new game content has been added.

Devlog - Mai 05, 2024

As you may have noticed, the demo is coming soon. This week I fixed various cosmetic bugs. Hundreds of small problems. A wrong icon, wrong voice output, etc.
Then this week I finished writing the story. Now it's about bring it into the game. I estimate that it will take about 4 weeks. I have to take a week's vacation to incorporate the story. It's quite complicated. Then two useful functions have been added. However, they are a bit hidden and are not explained in the tutorial because they are only intended for hardcore players. If you press SHIFT and left-click on a building, you can copy it like a kind of pipette. If you are in the houses or gap-filler building menu, you can press SHIFT and CTRL at the same time. If you then turn the mouse wheel, you can quickly switch between buildings. This is very useful for experienced players.

I finished the demo this week. Everything should be ready. The demo should give you an insight into what awaits you in the final game in about 1 month.
In the final game there is a sandbox mode, a story mode and the tutorial.
I have now started incorporating the story mode. It starts like the tutorial that you will soon be able to play with the selection of Virtutes. The Romans attached great importance to special characteristics such as honesty, hard work, etc. You can set virtutes yourself and thus determine the course of the game. Once these are determined, you begin writing your memoir. You'll see exactly what that means in the game.
This week I also added the rich Romans to the villas. So when you build villas, you will see some rich Romans walking among the columns of their gardens.

The demo is ready and waiting to be released. In the meantime, I'm continuing to work on the final version. This week one of the last missing features was added. The arcades. You can build arcades as soon as you have unlocked the Insulae buildings. These can be built along the street. Small traders will then move in and sell goods. These arcades cannot be built indefinitely. The larger the city, the more you can build. If you build a trade building, you can even build 100% more. The arcades will bring you a lot of tax revenue. If the arcades are also built on the two main roads, you will receive double the tax revenue.
The disadvantage of arcades is that buildings are no longer built directly on a street. This means that the residential buildings that previously benefited from a nice street now lose this bonus. So think carefully about where you build arcades.

I added another Villa Urbana this week. It is the villa from the German town: “Bad Kreuznach”. So there are now two large villas in the game. A third one is designed but not yet implemented.
I worked on the fire system. I'm not quite finished yet, but everything is working as it should . If a fire breaks out and a house is on fire, you can't put it out. You can only prevent the fire from spreading to the neighboring house. You can do this either with the water cannons, which have to be refilled again and again. Alternatively, your fire crews can demolish buildings and cut a swathe through the city. In addition, the fire always spreads in the direction of the wind. So look carefully at the fire tower to see where the flag is blowing.

Then the most important news, the demo will be ready soon. On **June 10th** you can play the Pax Augusta demo on Steam. I hope you will have a lot of fun. Bugs and feedback will be collected on Discord.

im curious as to how lively the city will be? like you mentioned in few posts above that youll see citizens in their villas, but other than workers and people just hanging about, are there other behaviours we will see that will add to cities visual life?
