How scary is this game?
I'm an extremely cowardly person. I don't usually interact with horror at all because I'm super easily scared. I got traumatized by Jumanji in childhood, to give an example of what I would consider to be scary.
I got this game on a whim, as it seemed to be the exact kind of weird I enjoy. But now that I have it installed, I'm having second thoughts. Does it have a straight-up horror elements, or is it more of a psychological manipulation stuff? Are there any games/films/books you would compare it to in terms of how scary it is?
(FWIW, I handle dark topics such as suicide, SA, etc. fairly easily. In fact, mature handling of difficult themes is often a reason for me to like something. It's specifically the horror aspect that bothers me.)
Thanks in advance!

It is twisted, i dont think it gory horror, but there may be more gruesome scenes the further one goes in the story, im not sure though . while only playing for the short time i have played, i have not seen scary horror. just disturbing actions and thoughts. but there is certainly paths that could get darker. however those paths may be rewarding in their own right ? but you will have to judge, if its worth the risk to your sensibilities . personally i dont think the horror is that bad. but as stated some scenes are disturbing and the potential to go darker is there. maybe play with some one you trust ? to help with difficult scenes?

oh yeah forgot they provide a link to for content warning in the games opening

Yes this is horror game it includes:
- eating people alive, dissolwing them step by step by body juice;
- slowly burning to death, showing layers of body burning away step by step close up;
- cutting flesh piece by piece, with grapchics;
- fully cut out body parts with revealed bones, muscles, tissues;
- skinning body (removing skin completly);
- tearing apart, crushing, slicing, impaling, showing open and cut wounds with blood seeping out;
- splashing organs on the walls;
- breaking will to live, forcing in submission.

In terms of how scary it is... Well i would compare to Saw movie series with seriousness and adultness of The Boys (minus sex scenes) and complexity of something like Butterfly Effect.

I mean, it's not like something SCAAAARY scary, all of that you can find even in Brutal Doom and pretty much all old school games (Duke Nukem etc).

I'm pretty fine with gore, and gore isn't scary for me on is own for sure. It's more about the atmosphere and jumpscares. Saw is less scary and more just gore-y, in my opinion. So it should probably be fine. Thanks.

there's one explicitly 'horrific' path that gets quite intense, accessed by leaving the princess in the basement in chapter 1. might be worth steering clear of that one.

I'd already started the game by the time you commented that, and this was literally the first thing I did, lol. Welp. It was rather bad, but I managed. Glad to hear it's the worst the game has to offer.

No there is definitely zero jumpscares and no unexpected death. So far there is only one atmospherically scary thing so i would rather warn you from get go - if you try to not enter cabin at all during first chapter and then enter it, everything becomes creepy. Devs did sigificantly reduced scaryness of scenes since demo, but still, it is the most horrifing part of adventure.

I'm not sure about zero jumpscares. I haven't gotten every achievement and princess yet, but I've found 2 jumpscare moments. First is the Beast where she lunges at you with a shriek repeatedly and second was actually if you idle on the title screen for too long. It's foreshadowed, but it still startled me.

That said, the game definitely hinges more on atmosopheric and body horror than on any jumpscares

i'm usually quite squeamish but i think i'm desensitized to this artstyle by all the like, horrible things the internet did to garfield

and there's no jumpscares, and you have quippy voices keeping you company the whole time, so i never found it particularly horrifying

I'm not entirely sure, but as I was looking at my other screen for a while, I heard something ominous. I think I saw her twitching for a while as a spooky sound played, and suddenly two shards of glass appeared close up with two different faces of hers.
Ultimately, not very scary but definitely startled me

it feels more existential to me than anything i could call scary honestly, but maybe im just peculiar and/or numb to intense imagery.
LotusBlade Oct 31, 2023 @ 11:07am
Well you can't really call beast a proper jumpscare cus game warns you about it several times in row (ruining atmosphere quite a lot).

This game doesn't have much in the way of cheap jump scares, although there certainly are some shocking and disturbing transitions where the scene will go from "we are having a relatively calm albeit creepy and unsettling conversation" to "holy sh*t that went off the rails fast."

Over all it's a well-crafted eldritch, psychological, and existential horror story where the vibe is unsettling, creepy, and mysterious. It's actually quite contemplative and thought provoking which is rare in horror. Some of the paths even have a Lovecraftian cosmic horror sort of feel to them.

On a scale of 1.- being playing "Tetris" and 10.- being playing "Dead Space at night with headphones" this game is a "3" it's more about making sense of it rather than being afraid of it, have fun!!! =)

The game is maybe scary for small children, but it barely qualifies as horror.
