How do I complete challenges? I know I turn them on, but what counts as completion?

You need to destroy the core to get the completion, then you will get permanent bonuses on that planet.

i thought those boosts are active only when the corresponding challenge is active

Would love to get confirmation of how this works, whether boosts are always on, or only when the challenge is active once unlocked

If you break the core with a challenge active, you get the corresponding boost to that challenge. The boost will be higher depending on the prestige it was completed on, and only applies to the planet you completed the challenge on.

I don't know if it applies immediately after the core is broken, or when you leave or prestige and restart or something though.

And once you get it, you have the boost on that planet regardless of whether or not the challenge is active.
