I am not mining the harder materials, just normal iron for like a minute, then will suddenly just get dropped to -1 fuel and I can't do anything about it.

its always if you reach about 2mio fuel through buffs

It's stack overflow. A value gets to a very large number and then computer flips it to negative. I don't know much about programming, but I've seen it happen in lots of games.

I haven't seen to be getting fuel overflow. reaching always around 200T fuel and havent seen it to go into -1 unless you die from losing fuel

Midgame spoiler warning: Have you unlocked shiny blocks? They can be to see when zoomed out, and have much higher health and deal much higher damage. The first time I ran into them it felt like i was randomly exploding.
