Missing friend in central forest

Hi all,
I am at the end of the game but I was never able to find the "friend" in the central area - I have it at 0% (so I assume there is only 1)
Anyone know what I missed? I've also have the atelier completely empty while I _think_ there should be something there? My guess I am missing some quest part of the painter dog. (I do have the portrait of myself). I got all the quests, items, collectibles etc. completed except for the harbor tournament one (still working on that one).

You have to complete the paint quest from the retriever in frog meadow (grow red, green, and blue color fruits), give those to him, then go back to where you first learned to draw and be his model for him painting, then go back to his house in the pier way
