Confused how to do Croco Test

Seems like I need to do more damage, but I don't really know how. Or at least my current gear isn't high enough. The other thread says upgrading hats works, but I don't have the materials yet. Also I don't have the Totem of Tenacity, I don't know where to get that. Is there an easy way to do this?

It seems like the rest of the places I have to explore are locked behind this, aside from a few puzzles I haven't figured out and the temple of Baat, so I'm not sure why the devs made it this way. Presents a bit of a pacing issue.

What I did was eat some food that increased my strength, I also had a hat that did that increase by dancing, but the food was quicker. And also used the hat that explodes. I think it also helped I had the two hit combo learned. With all that y just started spaming the attack while activating the hat as soon as it was available.
The hat at that moment was upgraded, so it may be needed too. Give it a try.
