400 players online?
The last COD I played was Black ops 3, before the whole crafting and battle royale became a thing.

I was trying to find a shooter similar to COD...military "looks", fast paced enough, arcade enough and with nice visuals.

For that I started a month of game pass, which will let me try Modern warfare 3 and Black ops 6 multiplayer.

Black ops 6 seemed close to what I mean, though there are so many weird things (people looking like sharks, zombies, laser guns, electrifying ammo or whatever I was seeing there).

Then I remember hearing good things about Cold War. The worse is, by releasing so many games, the community gets split up every time and I have no idea how many players are where. I don't think the steam counter is correct, especially because the game is also on other platforms (battlenet?).

So...seeing that it was "only" 20 when on sale, maybe could be worth it? Or am I better off just paying a couple months of game pass and playing black ops 6 or modern warfare 3...

But it is a fact, COD became really a flaming pile of **** with the years and I can only have nostalgia of the first COD (2003) and of the first modern warfare (2007), those were the games I am after today.

Cold War originally released on battle net. Now if someone owns on battle net it is mostly due to them buying it before it got released on steam. This game has cross play (because mostly console players are playing this I believe...)

But do you play cold war online? Is it populated?

I just tried a bit of deathmatch on modernwarfare 3 (through game pass) and it's actually exactly what I was looking for (as far as COD goes...), it does have the vibes of the older COD I was playing back then.

I doubt there will ever be scarcity of players with COD games but at least in the past it was that in older CODs only crazy tryhards or cheaters would stay, while "normal" players would go on the next COD.

P.S. I can't seem to find a way to check player count per game (Google not helping) in case Battlenet had a separate counter for every game...just to see.

few rooms with 8 or 10 players, one or two hackers and only one map, nuketown.

This game somehow is more dead than Vanguard. Takes forever to find a match in any game mode.

I haven't played COD in forever and then had a lot of fun playing the beta for MW3 and bought it. Then they added a bunch of little crappy maps rather than a 24/7 Rust mode so it really sucked playing all these brain dead boxy go out shoot, die maps rather than a map that actually takes a brain like Rust with verticallity and multiple routes.

So yeah get COD Cold War, MW devs are trash, they made a Battle Royale with HC TTK so if you camp with aim-assist and sound ♥♥♥♥♥ you'll pretty much kill anyone who doesn't camp or get a lucky HS with a sniper then all your hard work collecting stuff is over and you're dead. This game has 24/7 Nuketown, alive Hardpoint and demolition, and guns are way better than MW3.
