In the main campaign, Ireland is divided into small "Pretty kingdoms", each of them consists of 1 - 2 regions.
It is possible to play as them, but playing very small nations in this game is pretty difficult (not recommended for new players) and possibly dull (it is likely, there will be long stretches of time, when you are waiting and not much happens). The game is more optimized towards medium and large nations.

Playing an Irish petty king can be rewarding, but its not especially easy nor are these countries given as much attention as, say, Scots and English countries. I like the gameplay, so the challenge of being a weaker nation is reward enough but if you like countries with abundant unique buildings, you'd be better off picking another culture group. They do have a few unique units though, so its not merely a generic western european culture.

Personally I wouldn't say they are more difficult, they are probably better off military and econ wise then some of the larger nations. you'll have to have more patience with them though, as the def run into more cap management.

+ frontage
+ isolated
- isolated if want to try out things like crusades, still haven't tried one of those yet, each time I say going to do it something comes up and the enemy is so far away.... probably should just save scum a Crusades~Got A Bad Feeling About this... point and try it.
- - - you'll have to have a lot of patience as you start out more as a "tribe", petty kingdom status comes several advances later.

Where as the rest of the world in that area and france nations have a ton of less "shackles" to work through.

It's doable though, Uliad was my 1st play through, I'm at about turn 240 and between #5-#7 in game score.

Instead of scheming to take scotland I probably should have attacked England way earlier and just released everyone as independent nations.

France died by like turn 50 in my game, England and Normandy have been doing this epic throwdown in france for like 100 years lol

I'm about to try the great Irish invasion from scotland.... It's probably going to go badly though as England has all of norway accept a couple jutland regions and running around with like a million boats.

I have a bad feeling gong to conquer like all of england and they going to pull a rome on hannibal trick and just go take ireland and block me off from being able to get back....

ya, other then a couple units, I really didn't see anything overly unique unless you want to count how almost all of Ireland is super low frontage.

Crusades are a little bit misleading. You probably shouldn't send your own army turns away by sea just to take land in egypt and palestine that will be wrong religion and culture. Use the decision to send crusaders to permanently be owned by the crusader country, in exchange you'll get authority points when they win battles. Thats worth more than far away provinces.

you are correct. i just realized you could click on papel states to bring up option to join. It was sort of eh....

I was expecting something more like Medieval Total War or at least like the 1st Crusader Kings where they drop a banner or something.

It was sort of lack of fan fair. I think I'll sell the decision as don't really need the authority anymore.

not to derail op, but do you get legacy at all or unique buildings? I know that there was a decision card/event once upon a time but it seemed to function almost like a baron from the text so ended up throwing it out haven't got one sense.
