Need previous games for battles?

Game looks great but I read that you need an older title to be able to play battles, is that true? If so it would be an awful decision.

You do not need FoG:M to play the battles. The game comes with its own integrated battle system, which plays out the battles fairly quickly so you can get on with the campaign game. FoG:M integrates as an additional, and much more involved, way to play out the battles in single player if you so desire - though this can extend the time for a playthrough by a very large degree. So we leave it to players to decide on how (and if) they want to take advantage of this additional functionality.

which fog:M do u need if u want to go manual battles...fog:m II im guessing?...and which if any/all dlc's do u need
