Do not hesitate to give a thumbs up to counterbalance the negative reviews, by the way. Anything helps a new release.
In other grand strategy games (e.g. Total War) I find myself always building the same structures in similar patterns. Empires and Kingdoms force you to think about each decision more carefully, and each time I manage to boost the resource production of a region with a new structure, it feels very rewarding.
FoG: Empires is the only game I can think of where I felt empowered because I could build cultural buildings (monuments, theatres, libraries, scriptoria etc.). In Total War I tend to ignore these in favour of bigger military buildings.
My second favourite part are the turn-based battles (when simulated in FoG 2 and Medieval). I have never seen a more accurate representation of ancient and medieval battlefield tactics in any other game.
Fighting a climatic, big decisive battle in Field of Glory: Medieval is really cool. Then leaving all the small engagements to the other combat system is goodz.
The main asset is the very good combination with FOG2:Medieval.
The diplomacy got fleshed out. Love the new vassal system. (One of the biggest issues in Empire)
EDIT:
Bit sad its Kingdoms that got fleshed out and not the other way round. Kingdoms as first game and Empire as the more polished 2nd one.
Something about the Empire timeframe was just so amazing. Rome/Carthage/Hellenic/Barbarian/Steppe .... such a crazy time with so many interesting armies and cultures.
Yes this- Fields of Glory Kingdoms: THE META BUSTER!
If it helps Pocus did say they would revisit Empires with a final patch with some improvements from Kingdoms...
I even like the combat. I understand why certain units perform better at different times. game does a good job of showing me how and why certain units and formations work well together. And losing a battle, I normally understand why and can fix it the next time.
Thats great news! If we can input the diplomacy-vassal system and upgrade Empires. Would be amazing.
Also willing to pay for a DLC that upgrades Empires to Empires 1.5.
