As Wales you never can catch up with the large nations and thus never win.
In my eyes that were bad design decissions. They did not want to take over decadence from Empire, which allows small nations to catch up and at least have a chance to becoming a big player.
And they implemented this, which makes the game only winnable for very few nations.
it was telling that the scenarios, that came out for the youtubers were all with equal sized factions of similiar starting strength each. That way the problem with authority is not visibale and the game may be fun for everyone.
But the grand campaign is not for small nations even if they are choosable.
One of the issues for Wales will be a powerful neighbour so maybe worth trying to improve relations with England to delay getting steamrollered until you are ready.
this is really, fundamentally, wrong. The simplest way to gain net authority is to be below the demesne limit for your type of faction.
there are very very few tier 1 buildings that give authority so at the game start pretty much no faction gains that way.
As above, best solution is to smooch the Saxons so they leave you alone - at the very worst vassal yourself. Join Crusades when they start as that also offers some protection.
I've ended up #2 on legacy as Apulia/Italo-Normans and they have really serious constraints on the speed of any feasible expansion
And in real life, Wales is still under English occupation. Despite our puppet government in Cardiff.

when will this english vassal return this region to my vassal? it was taken by independents, and then the english came
i have good relations with the english
is this an oversight?
I am just the developer of FOG2 Medieval, so I cannot answer your question.
Def, I would like your saved game, as it would speed up finding the solution for the issue.

And I won t waste my time, to find out, if you can win with Wales in the release version. But I strongly doubt, that even if you can, that it is fun playing a one region starting nation.
The game is not for me because I have played the much better game Empires for years.
And even if you need a game to use the Engine and round the profile with the other field of Glory games in the medieval times, I never understood, why you could not just port Empire and its mechanics to this time period.
Why break a good working and fun system and proven UI for something is inferior.
I have won Multiplaer games with very weak factions like Massalia in Empires. But this would never happen in Kingdoms.
