How different is this?
It just seems like Field of Glory 1 but a re-skin. Did you.. do anything different? Screenshots don't really tell us much. Can you pillage? Any Scorched Earth tactics? Anything that might be considered helpful, going in the game itself??

The gfx are quite similar to FOG:Empires. Sorry, didnt play FOG1 and dont know how they look when you zoom in the campaign map.

It is fairly different. It takes all the best features from Empires, improved them while also adding new stuff unique to this game. To keep it short, said stuff includes the authority system, edicts, characters, reworked fortification system, difference between levies and professional troops, tag formations, holy wars and more. Of course the game is based on the same formula as Empires (lots of focus on buildings, exploiting resources and earning legacy), but the game is no mere re-skin.

Is it worth getting empires or just wait for this? Is there any need to get both if they are similar? Thx

Dynasties, kings, spouses, heirs
Religions, Crusades, Jihads, Holy Cities, the Papacy
6 times more buildings than in Empires, with dozens of new mechanisms and over 100 mini-events
10 cultural groups with special traits, each as developed as, or more than, Rome in Empires.
~60 decisions compared to 12 in Empires

The list goes on. I'm surprised the screenshots didn't provide hints about the differences, especially if you played Empires. Were you playing Devil's Advocate to see the reaction?

I suggest just taking a glance at the manuals for both games, they are both freely available on steam. Reading the key concepts should be enough to tell you how different they are. They are both very detailed games so based on the details I suppose that their gameplay will be, despite the similarities, different enough.
As for your question whether you should get empires or wait for this: Since Kingdoms is coming out in a few days, I'd get this one first. Though I recommend getting Empires as well, it's a great game.

They might be similar, but they are each depicting totally different periods. If you are interested in the classical period as well as the medieval period, I'd say get both.

Not necessarily Devils Advocate. It's just, there hasn't been much gameplay, to justify a full on purchase yet. How do the Crusades Work? Can you Crusade the Byzantines to react a 1204 Crusade Event? How does the Papacy React to the Orthodox/Catholic Religions within the region? You see what I'm saying here?

I want to know that there is a difference when I'm playing it. That I'm not just playing, just to play.

The manual has a very detailed description of the in-game mechanics around how a Crusade unfolds

IDK @Lord Kagami, but you start your initial post with "Did you do anything different" whereas in the screenshots you can see religions play an important role, it feels like you are fishing for some reactions ...

Anyway ... let's remain positive ;-)
Yes, you can reproduce the 1204 crusade. You can have the Crusaders, the faction (whereas any Catholic can be a crusader too), join forces with Venice and then sack Constantinople.

The Papacy likes Christian nations with high piety ratings. Not taking care of your piety in your regions will mean degraded relationships over time and possible excommunication. Orthodox Christians enjoy a rise in relationships between themselves over time. There is no degradation of relationships over time between Catholics and Orthodox Christians, but it will happen between Christians and Muslims unless you have an ongoing treaty with them, which will create "lines of fractures" over time.
