Ignore the misdirection. Both that which has already happened above and that which I am invariably going to be replied to with.
This game is meant to be played after the first. It is technically not "required," but its combat structure, gameplay mechanics, themes and world are designed specifically for players who have a familiarity with the first. If at all possible, it is strongly recommended.
The gameplay and the story don't require you to have played the first one but there are some story nods to the original and the difficulty curve does somewhat pick up from the previous game.
I'd absolutely recommend you play the first game, not just for the sake of playing Everhood 2 but because the first game is a blast and a great experience.
It's more fanservice than anything major (I hesitate to emphasize anything that happens in Everhood 2 as major or meaningful in any way), but I don't think it would make sense to jump into EH2 without playing EH.
Also, Irvine and Sam, two of the main characters in EH2, are minor characters in EH1. It doesn't matter much, but I think it's nice to encounter them in EH1 first.
Technically in the second chapter when we return to the map of the first everhood we meet Yellow that we have to kill and those who played the first title know well that inside there was Pink protagonist who had been transferred into the body from Orange to see if in a possible future a permanent solution had been found. So yes if you played the first chapter reconnect this thing in the second understanding who you are facing and giving a little peace in the cinema after that fight.
