Did you find the game getting boring in the end, I feel like trying this one too, if it has at least 40-50hrs of playing time it's good.
When they die "naturely", it makes his/her relatives and familie SAD.
But if you give them a chance to go to Valhalla...
Train them to troops and send them to sea.
Those who die during a raid, doesn't makes relatives sad. That's the point.
but until I have 10x Berserkers and 10x iron Maidens per ship (3).. I never raid alone.. always with a much larger very big city
You'll then win more than you lose.
Ofcourse the more war-docks you can build means more ships you can send.. 6 was the most I successfully sent.
I never send them to raid just to kill them. My raids are always supposed to gain loot.
It's just a nice byeffect, that some of the elder villigers don't come back. I always train some young folks, too, to have some long time warriors in my horde.
I think the elite troops, like shield-maiden and berserks are just too expensive for that strategy. Villagers 60+ will just become light infantry...
Thanks for telling me, that there are retaliaion attacks from lost raids... I didn't recogniced that.
Another point for raids is in my oppinion, that you can not produce enough high quality goods by your own. The clothes and tools for example are produced too slow to supply my whole town with those goods. Getting some extra food is nice, too to survive the winters. (Time your raids well, so the ships will come back with the loot, when it's needed.)
It's possible to play the game peacefull, of course. You can produce your own stuff and traide and so on... But what kind of vikings do you want to play? Odin does not feest with a bunch of hippies in valhalla... ;-)
Raid a wealthy area (good or better) and yes you get the coal, iron and food etc. However, more importantly, you get things like wintery clothes and high quality clothes. I came out of a raid with all over the and 40+ wintery clothes and 30+ hqc. Add the silver etc and it was quite nice. Means I don't have to craft them and that covers about 1/8 of the population in warm gear.
Keep raiding the same places over and over and you get diminishing returns. It's just pointless in the long run unless you're desperate.
Raid the new discoveries at a higher risk but explosive rewards. Chests of silver, gold, other treasures, livestock, slaves, and other loot like their weapons which you can sell for profit. As the ruler you set a percentage of loot you get because it's your ships, your warriors. You can set treasures in a special trove for your afterlife, and how much your warriors get. Obviously the more you divide in their favor, the happier they'll be and less likely they'll plot against you.
Once you've raided somewhere the more the raided lands become aware of you to the point they might send armies and navies against you. Whatever is historically or (for game purposes) that is appropriate.
