Can you ignore the story to get more playtime ..
.. or are there lots of gated updates etc?
Kinda wanting to pull the trigger on this game but just not sure about it. Have even watched a few vid reviews and just cannot get a good grasp on it.

Your character repeats the same stupid line each time he picks up an item off the ground. It became so annoying , I couldn't handle it after 10 minutes of hearing the same thing over and over.

If you can ignore the repeated voice lines the game is extemely good, i'm 18 hours in and still greatly enjoying the story and visuals (RIP Akira Toriyama). There's alot of side quests to do that you can use to put off the main story, and plenty of exploration to be done but there are a few points where you do need to do the main story in order to get the tools you need, or for more side quests to open up.
So much annoying stuff in the game, like gated progress and non-stop banter about EVERYTHING (even your current goals are getting repeated) to unnecessary items to pick up for some more background or general talk with other NPCs.

99% of the gameplay can and will be done in vehicles. If you can summon a vehicle, summon it and you will be breezing through the section. But there is again the gated progress for you need to advance in the main story for your material maker to upgrade their wares, which leads to a side quest for that upgrade.

But the damn 1% of the game, that can't be done with vehicle are either "Boss fights" (Very special boss fights, in which you are fighting in person) or the frickn excuse of stealth (Infiltration of military base for mats and parts, and yes, its awful)

Fantastic game, it all works together very well. I'd definitely play it.

And sorry, to address the question directly - yes there are lots of side quests and caves and other such things to discover out in the world. I've played about 20 hours and i've spent much of that just driving around, doing side quests and bounties, exploring.
