Can I play as the little hairy fella or any character other than a shirtless little demon kid?

Not really.

There are a few short sections like certain stealth sections, where you play as another character. These are very short sections and you can't do any of the usual gameplay stuff.

No, but my first impression was also kinda "meh" on the main character looks. He's got a super likable personality though, so that concern faded into nothing real quick.
