Report a translation problem
The checkpoints are placed at the beginning of each section, there are multiple sections per chapter.
Position on the map, letters found, the rock pile things, the spinning things. All of that is a measure of progress in the game (and could be saved).
I noticed it saved a fresco I highlighted on a secondary path forward where a checkpoint was.
Even though quitting the game put me back at the beginning of the section as usual, going back to the fresco I found it already highlighted.
It seems to keep track of the collectibles.
I found that it saved letters I had found, but they still show up as new when I encounter them.
Also shells reappeared. No idea if they are still marked as collected by the game because you can't see those in the menu.
