Why do some people use weak strategy battle teams
I keep fighting vs something like 8 lvl1 chars. Why do people use such teams? It's helpful to play against these teams. But do the people who use them also get some benefits out of it?

Yes. There's a reddit thread about it, actually. If I remember correctly, the purpose of doing so was to not only reach the highest rank possible on Strategy, but to also help other players to reach the said rank (Challenger). The rewards are lucrative; eternium alone is very generous per week. But the downside is, you'll not earn any gauntlet currency for each defend your Strategy team does; you'll receive a mail everyday of no wins, and you don't get rewards because your team is very weak.

However, this is where Ranked compensates. For those who want the real pvp experience, that's what Ranked is for.

Because quite frankly strategy battle is horribly imbalanced towards the attacker at all times. The weekly bans only apply to the defender. Leaving the attacker free to always use the most broken options like AHori or RKing on attack with their correct ships and best complementary units.

So why bother trying to set a good defense team each week when you can cherry pick higher rank opponents to revenge against for more rank points than you'd normally get for your attacks. Since the rewards cap out at 6000+ points for Challenger 1 ranking... as long as you can maintain above that point who cares? To even attack you somebody has to be within a hundred rank points generally.

The actual fighting is done over in RTA where the rewards are higher and the bans apply to both sides.

I thought a lot of ppl just use really low CP teams to just help the rest of the community out to get free points since strategy battles are pretty pointless.

Even without the ban list, your opponent have to be really bad to lose against AI placing units in the back in random orders.

That's why I do it. I hate this grinding stuff. I just have level 1 team and stupid ship that doesn't actually do anything. So I'm still amazed when I get a win because you have to really try to lose to my team of level 1s.

The defense side is no random. Only the attack side is.

Attacker: Random hand, just leader is guaranteed
Defender: Deploy in order set by the player, but bans apply

I don't do it anymore, but I used to just auto-battle through strategy battles. And sometimes, I'd alt-tab away before checking that my auto was actually enabled. I'd then alt-tab back to my ship being destroyed or a lost battle.
The amount of points you can lose each day is capped, and far below what you can gain. The idea is if everyone ran free win def comps we would all climb and receive top rank rewards without any downside. Also you can cherry pick teams from your revenge tab to fight allowing you to hit people many points out of your league and gain more per win than from what would be available to you, meaning a free win def will allow you more revenge battle targets to pick from.

After the merge, I've already fought a couple of teams with apparently low scores composed of level 1 units but with 2/3 level 110 with maxed out gear that annihilated my team.

An awakened jake with full maze +10 isn't exactly easy to kill.

Weirdly enough, this also applied to Ranked for me? Unless I misunderstood. Units that were on the ban list, continued to be the same price for me, even checked it in battle. Idk if it was a bug, or I'm an idiot.

Strategy Battle is just a dull grind that's heavily attacker favoured, so I just do the level 1 meme ship team hoping others will be considerate. Particularly during an event that wants you to spam strategy battle as much possible. Yeah I open my mail to 70+ losses a day, but like others said you don't lose much and will still inevitably hit challenger if you want it.
