How to destroy items. PLEASE HELP T-T

I have my whole inventory full of scrap as well as my chest, i cant seem to be able to throw it away, ive seen its used the letter "d" but doesnt seem to work. Please help

use the recycle option. it's found on the bottom of the inventory UI. press it, select the items you no longer want and press again to confirm.
