I've been having fun wasting some time with it now and again.
As for the OP, yeah this game is amazing. It initially got hate due to it not being a Torchlight 2 clone, but nowadays this game is great especially if you get past that idea of Torchlight. The feel is still there. Gameplay loop is fun.
It's literally not but sure
There were also a lot of videos made claiming the game was extremely P2W and predatory, which is dubious at best but outrage generates a lot more clicks, so go figure. You can play it entirely F2P and do perfectly fine as long as you have a solid build.
It did have some technical issues, too. But those have been resolved, that is the issues from launch. As with any live, ongoing game, there's always going to be some issues floating around.
In the mean time, X.D. has shown an impressive initiative adding in many features the community has asked for, including adjustments to make the HUD better on PC, controller support, STEAM only accounts instead of requiring third party (which was done because TL:I is meant to be played on any device, and they need a way to track the account if you want to log in from some other device, so no shock there really).
The game itself is pretty fun to play and while it does stray, it feels similar to the original TL games (to me at least), and does what the original studio failed to do, create a F2P season based live-service game.
The "story" and "environment" are best viewed as some "alternative universe" or timeline or something, because while the original TL games never really had a proper story to begin with, TL:I is very different and has the usual Asian themed story/world design, etc.
In the end, it's free, there's no reason not to try it but I'm still concerned for it's longevity because while X.D. seems committed to it, who knows how the "parent" company feels about it and how long they'll see it as a worthwhile investment. Something to keep in mind if you consider spending any money on it. Though no live-service game lasts forever, so you spend money knowing that.

You know the word "subjective" and what it means?
By no metric is this game "second best".
Playercount: Maybe Top 5 (even Grim Dawn, a 8 year old game, has more average players on steam than TLI)
Steam Reviews: Not even in the top 5
i got banned for 10 FREAKING YEARS even though im innocent.their customer service is horrendous as well.
so,if you wanted to see your main account which youve put so much effort in goes to dust in the blink of an eye FOR NO PARTICULAR REASON,you can go ahead and try.its a pretty fun game, hence, why ive been playing for years.
otherwise, just dont.their discord/forums/facebook is not updated, and their customer service might probably a bunch of people who was outsourced and was extremely unhelpful in my predicament.theres plenty of other game out there
POE might be in the rut, whats with the disastrous 3.24,but,LE is pretty decent,IMO
