Which slots do trigger skills go in? Passive? (I don't have passive skills unlocked yet)

Trigger skills are like gambits in Final Fantasy XII, or like the programable AI in Dragon Age. There are a variety of skills that say "When this happens..." and then you can chain a variety other spells along with them to cast those spells when the trigger happens.

For example, Death Pact triggers when you hit an elite. You could link this with Souleating Circle, Fixate and Mana Boil to automatically cast those spells when this happens.

There is also Cast on Critical Hit, or just Curse on Hit. You can also chain all of this with Seal Conversion as well to reduce the sealed mana these cause.

I get how they work, I just don't know how to link one with an actual skill.

They go in the passive slots. The same place you put in the auras.

And don't forget about the "Tag", trigger skills can only automatically cast the corresponding skill type, for example, auto defense can only link defense skill.

Do I need to unlock a support skill slot first? Seems kinda silly to let me install a trigger skill but not be able to use it without additional investment.

I wouldn't worry about it right now because you want to link 2-3 spells to something like this, which means you'd have to have a lot more energy than you have to accomplish this. You're way too early in the game by the looks of things.

I would focus on beating the campaign. It takes about 5 hours. Get into the end-game. You will have a lot more energy by then. In the end-game, gear also drops with energy on it while further allows you to unlock more skill slots. I have characters with over 400 energy, but you need to get into the end-game to achieve anywhere near that.

For the story, it's important to optimize your main skill. Give it several links that boost its damage and utility to make it strong. In fact, I'd say getting the full 5-links on your main skill is one of the highest priorities in this game.

As for your passive slots, pick an aura that boosts damage or does something for your main skill.

The trigger skill unlocks like around lvl 50? You may unlock it at the late stage of story. But as mentioned above, you could focus more on main skill which brings you obvious damage increase, and you can use trigger skill to support you, but aura skills are more stable.

Bought cast on severe injury at around level 12.

Sorry but that's a bug, it should unlock at lvl 42. And you can't take 6400 damage at lvl 12:lunar2019crylaughingpig:
