As for characters, it's not any different than league of legends or whatever. Some of the base characters are actually at the top of the leaderboards. Also, you can get characters for free in this game - and DoubleMoonkin is completely wrong here.
At the end of the day, the devs need to make money. Instead of charging money for stash tabs like Path of Exile, you can pay for characters. As far as I am concerned, stash tabs seem easily purchasable with the free currency the game gives you. Characters are also earnable in-game, and frankly you should get a free character every season with not much effort on your part. I actually got enough currency for a character and a half in season 2. So when DoubleMoonkin said it takes 6-9 months, I'm just going to say they are lying or ignorant. This statement is just wrong. Ultimately, do you trust the person who only played 23.8 hrs, or the one that played 120+?
I also want to point out that characters are sold for 980 primocryst, and shop sells exactly 980 primocryst, which is honestly way more pro-consumer than most games of this sort. The first time you purchase the 980 pack, you get a double bonus so that's like 2 characters for 20 dollars canadian, which is pretty fair seeing as that might be the only thing you ever have to buy for a 3-6 month period.
It has to be said, the pay characters are not paying for power. Some of them don't rank as highly as the free ones, and I think many people would argue that many of the pay characters are harder to play than the free ones and require more effort to make them good.
The only P2W aspect is the pets, but they aren't game changers, if you're stuck on a difficulty I don't think pets will change anything, it's just a bonus.
IMO it would be better if money was 100% for cosmetics only, but it isn't a big problem and I've played almost 50 hours during the last 2 weeks !
Can't wait for the new season (I don't have enough ressources/time to get a build powerful enough to unlock T8, hopefully I'll do it next season).
I started pretty late in the season as well. I expect with 3 months time, we'll be able to chip away at it no problem. Progression is supposed to be a little easier with respect to drops in season 3 due to the new partial crafting features, which should hopefully help.
