Rodion and Gregory cantos are kind weak :/
I'm a new player, so please don't ravage me in the comments.

So today I finished 5th canto and really like how they try new things, both gameplay and plot wise. It reminded me of Gregory and Rodion cantos and just how boring compared to new ones they are. At first I though it a lack of antagonist, both Ishmael and Sinclair cantos gave us a 'villain of the week' to defeat beside collecting golden bough, but then there's Yi Sang canto where we get villain at last quarter of story.

After some thinking I think main problem of first cantos is lack of suspense. You just go for golden bough, sinners just don't react in any interesting way to whats happening. You can forgive Gregor for that, because at that moment we didn't know about sinners pasts being a needed part to search for golden bough, but Rodeon is just sad case. Such a great and charismatic character and such forgettable story :(

So what's your opinion on this guys?

Canto 1 and Canto 2 are still both part of the "tutorial" portion of the game to me. Introductory chapters for the lore/background/worldbuilding of the game.

Both 2 Cantos aren't really resolved like the latter Cantos, with Chapter 6.5's Intervallo being Canto 2 Part 2. This might also play on the character of the Sinner of that Canto: both Gregor and Rodion didn't face their "fears" in their respective Canto and instead forced to return empty-handed and retreat.

Kafka is collecting the Antagonists of every Canto, with her in N.Corp as the Canto 3 memento. Sonya and the Yurodivye are thriving even better than before Rodion left.
in comparison yeah, the other cantos had much more buildup and more stakes at play, together with the added difficulty and game mechanics.

personally the first canto was great, it pushed failure after failure onto the sinners, showed betrayal, disappointment and the darkest of endings but when they picked up that gasmask up and continued with their journey that moment was really emotional. that was a great intro into the city landscape and what to expect without being over the top like introducing alternate dimensions or whatever.

canto 2 was a lot more lighthearted and casual which i think was also great, i was really depressed after finishing canto 1 but i was uplifted by the mood in canto 2 which got me to conitnue playing. if we didnt compare cantos in a vacuum but instead considered how good they were in the blind moment i think they deserve some praise.

In business school you learn about this thing called "service level" in logistics which is basically a relation between demand and operational costs. So in Canto 1 and 2 Project Moon were operating at a low service level margin due to less budget, or probably because they were conservative or insecure about how well the game would perform, since they were just entering the gacha market. Then as soon as they started profiting from the game, they could afford to start operating on a higher service level and provide better fidelity to attend the customers expections as they went on. It is simple as that.

Starting operating with a high service level right of the start is almost always a gamble in most business, or just straight up burning money for minimum or no gain in return. Sure, you can cause a good first impression, but it can end up not paying off in the long term. On the other hand, operating on a very low service level to save or cut costs as much as you can is also bad, since it can turn the delivery inefficient and drive away customers.
But it is often better to start from a safe spot and then escalate thing as necessary and as profit becomes favorable.

Canto 1 and 2 were early in the story (obviously, being the first 1) so it's not like they wanted to start the game off with wrapping their stories up immediately. Hence why both of them end on cliff hangers and neither has a proper 'canto' boss like we have in 3 and beyond.

So, yeah they're weaker in terms of story, but they're mostly setup and introductions into the world of Limbus and the City. Especially for those who haven't played Ruina or Lob Corp yet.

That being said, the entire Casino arc for Canto 2 is one of my favorite parts in the entire game. Start to finish was just a wild ride of idiotic fun. It was like a classic D&D heist where a carefully laid plan quickly unravels into a '♥♥♥♥ it, random ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ go!' type of situation. Everything under the casino was pretty bland though...

Canto 1 did have some great moments and scenes and it really did a lot to develop Gregor without finishing his entire character arc so early into the game's plot. It leaves more room to grow while still giving us a great look into how he became who he is and such. Plus... rip Yuri, they should've handled killing her differently imo. I think that was the worst part of the canto, either let her live or kill her during a cutscene instead of the skill check menu!

With all of that said; it's really just up hill from there, as you've seen with Cantos 3-5 so far. 6 is really good too, 7 is one of the best, and we're just about to get into 8 with Hong Lu's story. I'm most excited for 9 with Ryoshu (best girl).

So, they weren't as amazing because they were jumping on points meant to set up the themes and tones of the plot as well as set up the future.
Considering Sonya and Hermann are both set up to be major recurring characters, both of their chapters felt like they'd get a second part later once things were more established (potentially financially influenced as well as Flint says above, I've heard in a few different places that PM opted for gacha from financial troubles but I've never personally looked into it, so take that with a grain of salt).

We didn't see much related to Metamorphosis itself for Gregor's other than bugman lmao and the apple (causes an infected wound in the book), and Rodya's felt more like it was handed off to the sinners rather than obtained proper thanks to Sonya chilling at the bottom of the cave as an introductory member of the Blue Man Group; either that or his name being a lighter shade of blue means he's the gloom goblin of Hermann's group.

With the introduction and usage of the Peccatula Viridiae having their own EGO pool to work with and the chain battle system tossed in recently, I suspect we'll be throwing hands with them soon, if not starting next Canto. We'll see how things shake out.
they will be revisited. there was no real conclusion to either, so eventually we will get a mili song for both.
