Piloted correctly you get access to infinite rupture count and do stupid damage. Check the video below for some really fast boss clears.

He doesn't have GLUT.TONY DEFENSE SKILLs. You can't get it as fast as possible.
If by "crippled" you mean they skip boss phases, so you experience less content, than yes. It's a legitimate reason I don't use them in story on my 1st playthrough.
Devyat Rodion and Cinq Meursault not depleting count is completely broken, so doubling down on their actions per turn is the best thing you could be doing right now.
And all the new Rupture units that came after them suffer for it. Fanghunt Hong Lu, Devayt Sinclair and now LCE Yi Sang all make your team worse. They still function in MD simply because the gifts carry you, but they will break your combos outside.
If you don't feel like running a 4/6 team, include the old units that don't have a stupid 15x3 limiter on them, like Seven Heathcliff or Rosespanner Gregor. It's not really worth it though.
By crippled I mean I have to use some stuff like 00 Talisman sinclair to get it to work, or having to deal with retreat mechanic. I like my 6/6 team, with 6 support passives. Rupture in itself suffers from lack of good units in the field that can stay consistently and deal much damage. That's why I opted for charge hybrid, if you use W-corp hong lu you can get 5 charge and adding in Cinq Meur 5 rupture. Kinda awesome, high clash power from the charge and damage from rupture. Don't even need charge fusion gifts, just the field and big glove thing.
Maybe I will try 4/6 team when I get my hands on devyat rodion, wasnt that much interested in her when she came out. Still, hopefully intervallo will bring more rupture to the field.
