What the heck is going on with ryoshu?
I haven't read the novel or book she's based on, but I'm still very curious about this whole child thing. As childcare isn't really a subject Project Moon has brought up. If anyone has ideas where this could go, you can put them here.

I sorta figured something like this, but I was curious as to what happened to her baby. Like did they pass away, or maybe stolen?

Sounds like a hostage situation to me.

Should read "Hell Screen" and "Spiders Thread" tbh 40(ish) pages and 2 pages respectively

Edit: I recommend reading a physical copy though, both stories are in Akutagawas "Rashomon and Seventeen Other Stories"

if you're not fussed with pdf format though should be pretty easy to come across

Well, there was a theme in the original book with a child dying. That's all you have to know.
extremely simplified, but basically her book counterpart wanted to paint "hell", but since he could never paint anything without seeing it first, he wanted to see what hell looks like.

so he burns her daughter and paint the fire.

its not his daughter that was supposed to be burned however. he requested to Lord Horikawa so that he may burn a random maiden for his hell screen, but Horikawa, whos also as insane, substituted the maiden for Yoshihide's daughter without him knowing. He did suicide the day after he finished the screen.

It's likely, or at least possible, that her "baby" isn't a literal child but the titular Hell Screen (or its equivalent in this world).

I doubt it. It's likely her actual daughter when we consider what happened to her in the book and both Ryōshū and Yoshihide's behavior.

In the book, Yoshihide did care for his daughter (though no more than that) and unintentionally had her burned in a carriage to paint the final part of the Hell Screen. An equivalent of this would have happened between Ryōshū and her daughter.

Assuming the "Spider's House" that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Lei Heng mentions is based on The Spider's Thread (another short story by Akutagawa), Ryōshū's daughter is trapped in a place similar to the Hell found in that story as a result of what she [Ryōshū] did. Alternatively, the Hell Screen will have something more to do with that.

I'll keep this part a bit simple, but Ryōshū is in denial of the fact she was not a good mother. (In Hell Screen: "Yoshihide's love for his daughter, however, remained just that: love.") It can be assumed that she never did anything more than keeping her daughter at her side, and that unwillingness made her unable to do anything once her daughter actually could not be there. She dislikes and does not know how to deal with this realization; thus, she focuses on nothing but her art (in other words, the violence she is drawn to) and is also shown projecting this onto others. Her Red Eyes & Penitence Identity's story is a great example of the latter: "Unless you're merely a pathetic, fallen shell of a thing, who can do nothing but grandstand… if you really consider these baby spiders your family… … shouldn't you be attacking me by now?"
Aye just like I don't think she painted A Hell Screen with a brush more like she caused a Hell Screen with her unsheathed Odachi

Interesting that not only did the walking brick ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ call her Yoshihide but also mentioned Spider's House. Which makes me think shes only done one redeemable thing in her life for said person in this house

And this is why PM giving her 4th Match Flame EGO is deeply hilarious to me lmfao

"Walking brick ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥"... Pfft. G.O.

Back to the point, though. I would say the events surrounding the Hell Screen and Ryōshū's daughter in the past was a way of getting Ryōshū under control. Yoshihide in the book was extremely arrogant and shameless, a few qualities that we can see in the current Ryōshū that she likely had in her past as well. She only shrinks in the face of Lei Heng because of his status as part of the Thumb, knowing she can't do much (if anything at all) without repercussions as a result, and because she knows he can and will use her daughter as a pawn against her if she does try anything, which makes her both furious and afraid.
