What is a Golden Bough?
Is there much lore regarding what it is?

According to wikipedia it is this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Golden_Bough.

Also this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Golden_Bough_(mythology)

According to Encylopaedia Brittanica it is this: https://www.britannica.com/topic/The-Golden-Bough

Edit: This is a good page regarding this https://everything.explained.today/The_Golden_Bough/

Does the Golden Bough of Limbus have any reference or meaning to the one in the classics literary sense?

Or is it just a story doodad as some reason why the odyssey exists?

Does the Odyssey have a purpose?

Any lore information, would be helpful.

Thank you,

It's not a reference to some random publishing house.... use some common sense, people.

And Frazer's "The Golden Bough" draws inspiration from the scene in the Aeneid, where Aeneas offers the bough to the gatekeeper of hell to gain admission...

Translation: I don't know what I'm talking about.

Every Fantasy Book in Korea was once know as a Golden Bough because Golden Bough publishing was basically dominating the market. Not just korean books, but stuff like Sherlock Holmes got published by them and got known as Golden Bough books, too.
And you're in a game where all the characters are references to popular books worldwide.
I need not say any more.

Probably some byproduct of that Seed of ligth thing. PM most likely havent finished up the whole concept, so they keep up the intrigue. It's not the entertaining part anyway, it's like in them German tales about Nibelung ring, or the later versions about The Holy Grail, just some important placeholder thing, and the interesting part is the search for it itself. Not a bad trope, actually.

Edit: So they referenced a very important Korean publishing house, that's cool. Shame that my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ backgroud doesnt allow me to get the reference significance.

There's no symbolic relationship between the Golden Bough in the game, and the Golden Bough publishing company which I've never even heard of until today.

If you want to explain, then go ahead.

Whereas if you look at the Aeneid, there are very clear parallels to the Golden Bough + Dante in this game.

The Golden Bough publishing is a daughter branch of Minumsa Publishing. From what I skimmed it capitalizes on publishing and importing the Genre (basically anything that is not science based) literature. That in turn leads me to believe the name was inspired by the same source as the Frazer`s book.

Yes, the greek analogy is most likely. Seeing as we have Dante's Inferno and suchlike...

Golden Bough website. From what I surmised, there are a few internationally popular books that have been published there, but saying they are responsible for popularizing "every fantasy book" in Korea is ridiculous.

Worth nothing: they published "50 shades of chicken" thats pretty pog.

Wouldn`t it be Roman/Italian then?

What a shame you can't see it, Cat.

I can't believe it, you made up a quote to try and discredit me and it ended up being correct.
Yes, Golden Bough publishing popularized Fantasy in Korea by getting the rights to publish fantasy books from both overseas and inside of korea. They were the first people to do so.
Birp 21 fev. 2024 às 10:45
I can't...

this guy really thinks PM named the golden bough after a random publishing company...

instead of it being a reference to the Aeneid, written by Virgil, who is also a character who guides Dante in The Divine Comedy...

Okay you win.

"Lord of the Rings" the OG fantasy book wasn`t published by them, it was Dongsuh Press from 1988 to 1992.

Can't it be both? I figure they used Aeneid and then were like, it's also a cool reference, and went with it anyway.

Tbh, I created this thread as I was curious about the game lore. It's derailing quite a bit...

Lore wise we have jack, so the next best thing is to try and guess what do the boughs reference (if anything at all) and try to extrapolate it into the limbus plot.
