How exactly does it work? Do I just get access to the identities/EGO's of my friends, or?

Yes but only for story encounters/dungeons. Just click on the portrait of character you want to add during combat preparation window and there select "support". if any of friend accounts has this character listed, it will be available there. The more friends you have the better selection, so it makes sense to get some :)

When you're on the screen where you select your team before entering combat, you select your own Sinners like you normally would, then lock your team (pressing the yellow button on the lower right) and click a Sinner you would like to borrow from a friend. Apart from the usual "ID" and "E.G.O" tabs, there will be a new tab labeled "Support".

Click the Support tab and pick the desired rarity of the desired Sinner. After entering combat, the friend's Sinner will be in your party and you'll be able to use him/her for the duration of the fight.
