assuming one doesn't have a targeted ID/ego in mind, and disregarding threads: for how many characters with remaining ID/EGO would the 3x targeted shard box be worth more unlocks than 5x general shard box
assuming the type of shard given by the shard box is picked uniformly at random, there is x/12 chance it'll be on a character you want (where x is the amount of chars with unlockables remaining)
since you choose between 5 general shard boxes and 3 targeted shard boxes, we'll want to solve this equation :
5x/12 = 3
which means x=36/5 which is around 7
so my takeaway is if you have 7 or more characters with identities or egos left it's worth more to get 5 shard boxes, and if you have only 6 or less characters with unshockable left : get the 3 targeted shard boxes

I wouldn't say random fragment boxes are good. If you have a minimum of 7 characters with stuff needed that is a 60% chance per box that it will be useful. While the odds are in your favor it is not by much.

I believe you would need a higher % of identities and egos to make it worth it. Since losing 2/5 is a high possibility at 7/12.

You also need to keep in my threads you will need 100s of them if you want to uptie any thing you pull and make them actually usable.

It depends on how hard it will be to get 400 shards for a specific character. If it's not that difficult, then random is way better, otherwise, targeted should be better.

But I would honestly just go random for now since probably there will be events / compensation rewards / content in the future that will help out with shard gain, hopefully.

go random is the more efficient route for THREAD conversion. However if your aim is to target farm a specific ego/000/00 then the select egoshard box is the superior choice by far.

Here's the problem with that, its still rng, You can end up getting a ton of shards for characters that you have everything for making them useful for thread at best,

Not to mention that this only works if you aren't planning to pull either, if you happen to pull any character you don't have, all the ego shards you got from the red crate of that character will now be pointless as well ( again this is for unlocking characters not thread )

With the yellow crates, regardless of what you pull, you will always have the choice of changing who the ego shards are for as long as you aren't instantly opening them when you get the crates. If you wanted ting tang Hong Lu, and you save 200 yellow crates and then you got lucky and pulled him regularly, now you can use those crates on a different identity.

It is vastly superior in terms of getting what you want and unlocking identities quicker, The red crates are very rng based, and will have to rely on luck to make use out of them outside of collecting thread.

"Probability" button on the banners. It's in the same area where it discusses Egoshards being coverted at the end of the season.
