Why do the Lin Kuei hate the word Ninja?

I thought they were the inventors of ninjutsu in the Mortal Kombat universe, and yet the noun derived from their martial arts technique is treated as an insult in their culture.

I thought as per MK lore, the Lin Kuei invented ninjutsu, though some clan members deserted and formed a splinter faction in Japan, hence the Shirai Ryu

Tobias was inspired by a book he'd read about the Lin Kuei "chinese ninjas". He posted that on his Twitter account

In MK lore the Chinese Lin Kuei created the art that would be called Ninjutsu latter in Japan.
It was brought to Japan after a Lin Kuei dissident, called Takeda, fled the LK and founded the Shirai-Ryu clan ( and thats why LK and SR are long term enemies)
