Invasion sucks to play and here's why
To quickly provide some context, I have already completed all the mesas and did most of the content unlocked after beating the main boss in the last mesa, so I've played it quite a lot. To get to the point, these are the reasons why I think invasion sucks to play, and without the cosmetic incentive I would've never touched the mode:

1) Movement between nodes is incredibly slow, and having no minimap is a slight inconvenience

2) The bots have an extremely low difficulty, yet frustrating mechanics. I'd like to talk to the person who thought giving them random super armor for their attacks was a good idea, and I don't want to even talk about the random "powerups" that they get and inflict status conditions onto you whenever you get near them (switching your controls every 3 seconds, making the screen go black whenever they get hit, etc.)

3) The stage mechanics feel super gimmicky when paired with the bots super armor. Getting them into a combo is a chore enough, but when you get knocked out of your combo by a random fireball coming from the stage, it starts to get old real fast.

4) Every fight aside from boss fights are practically worthless. Most of the time they just give you talisman which fill up your inventory, resulting in you needing to discard 1-2 after every fight. Also, unless you're REALLY struggling with the bots, you won't ever use a talisman.

5) The bonus fights you get after completing the final boss (access to areas with a nether stone) are even worse to play through. They're the same bots with quadrupled, boss-like health and don't even give boss-like rewards. The best you'll get are some palettes for the new scorpion skin you got from beating the final boss.

Honestly I can go on, but these are just the main points that I really didn't like about the mode.

I just got done going through Invasion, and yeah, it's a chore to beat it. The amount of battles on each island should be cut by about half IMO, as it all really drags on after a while. And the nearly constant "Secret Battle" pop ups just make it take even longer to get through, resulting in it feeling like a dull grind.

It's a shame, because I can see the potential in the Invasion area. Seasonal new mini-stories to play through, getting random items to use and gold to help unlock stuff... it could be interesting. But it really needs to be trimmed down and focused better so that it doesn't feel like a complete slog to play through.

The biggest problem with invasions is the meaningful rewards are spread way too far apart. People complained about the living towers in MK11 because of the grind, but at least you knew what you were working towards rather then everything being a random reward your grinding for.

Its not a 100% deal breaker for me as most of my time will be spent online, but a lot of the single player content feels rushed and hastily put together.

I was ok with there being no kryp mode at first but after putting a good amount of time in invasions, I actually liked the MK11 krypt 10 times better even with its problems.

the whole armor thing sucks when the enemy has armor for like half the round

they really did just give us the awful mk11 towers again, but without the ability to make an ai suffer for us. i finished everything up except for the post-boss fights (and definitely won't be doing them seeing that there's basically no reward for it), and i took one try at the gateway towers and knew instantly i wanted nothing more to do with the mode til the next season releases.

it's kinda satisfying working your way through everything, but man it's just not fun at all when your screen is completely black, your controls get flipped, and both characters keep getting hit with smoke/fire/whatever every 3 seconds so you literally can't do anything. and ofc the enemy health keeps getting higher and higher with a 300+ second round timer on top of this so you're basically just idling til the timer runs out.

they really gotta re-evaluate those towers though. there's so little singleplayer content as is and the only "fresh" content being both characters coughing and falling over while getting hit with fireballs for 4 minutes just isn't very enticing.

how did this happen, the krypt was so chill and relaxing despite the creepy atmosphere, now its just cheap smash bro fights over and over and over with the most infuriating modifiers possible.

the flipped controls are so bad, they change it too so one second, down is up then another second down is left etc

I didn't bring up the Invasion modifiers in my previous post. The fights with fog so thick you can't see your characters, darkness so dense you can barely see anything, and your character coughing/getting electrocuted constantly... that was infuriating. I didn't mind so much how the screen went black when you were close to an enemy, because you could back away and see everything again. But the other stuff I mentioned? Yeah, those were some bad ideas to run with for modifiers IMO. Some of the fights drag on as it is because of the enemy's armor, hit points, and all that (especially later fights in Invasion). We didn't need modifiers that made it even worse.

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot to like in this game. The fighting's good, the visuals are on par with MK11 so they're fine, the fatalities/brutalities and Kameo characters are interesting, etc. But it's all being hampered by gameplay design choices and some glitches (hello hovering heads) that will hopefully be addressed via patches in the future.

The earned exp is also unbalanced. Like there is no difference whether you defeat a 30 lv boss or get ambushed by 11 lv nobodies whom you can 1-2 shot, in both cases you earn the same exp. Well, actually you can get more exp for nobodies if there are 3 of them in a row, lmao. Rewards for beating those 30 lv bosses need to be adjusted.

It would of been interesting if there would of been a camp you can explore and interact with Mortal Kombat characters. VR Sidescroller would actually make the fights 3D.

there should be photomode, where you can spawn any level and take some pictures.

Invasions is game padding and content gating -- it's all those modes are ever intended to be.

If they were being genuine about wanting to add ancillary modes that people wanted to play, they would have expanded the Krypt to be some open-ish world ARPG, where you can pick your characters (even make a custom one), and explore / progress through it. Either that, or some co-op "Shaolin Monks" 2.D platformer. Hell, even if they'd have added mini-game modes like "Kombat Kart" and "Puzzle Kombat", people would have accepted Invasions for what it is... But, seeing as that's all there is aside from the PvP, it's little wonder people are underwhelmed -- "seasonal" updates or otherwise (who wants to play something that's boring, "seasonally"?).

A horizontal (technically, isometric) board game that is a thinly veiled Towers / Multiverse, skinned in a village aesthetic, is simply a cynical way of trying to hide a rehash that, again, is only there to gate the meagre content pickings they will toss at players to keep the game looking active (...at least, what they think will keep the game looking active).
