They really should have remade that game instead of this it would have felt like a proper reboot. Sure the balance was bad in that game but thats what you would fix about it.
All these comments citing the garbage 3d era... smh. They almost went out of business because of those games.
The ps2 era was fun as well, tho deception and deadly alliance kind of blur together as its been so long since I played them, but I remember enjoying both at the time, where as Armageddon while cool with all the characters, also felt really lazy and uninspired with the weak fatalities and such.
In the new era, the best would have to be mortal kombat 9. It was a literal love letter to the fans and before the devs got handcuffed into no longer being allowed to have sex appeal in the series. Anyone who tries to claim sex appeal didn't go hand in hand with the violence is lying or uninformed. Nine also essentially recreated the original trilogy with better graphics and a much better fighting engine than the series had ever had before. It had all the characters and stages you would want and all sorts of fun costumes for all the characters. It even had a fun tag mode, it was perfect and the ultimate love letter to the fans. Mortal kombat always had a cheesy story, the fans knew the story, but it was obviously nothing to write home about. Then in nine they actually wrote an epic story that was full of references and changes that long term fans could pinpoint and be an awe and existing stories were changed around and redone in fun ways, like smoke staying human and such and other little and major changes.
So I guess the correct answer would be as a child it was most definitely ultimate mortal kombat 3 the rocked my world, as an adult mortal kombat 9. The ps2 era was during high school and while fun, it wasn't as impactful on my gaming memories as much as ultimate 3 and 9. I mean as a kid everyone would talk about mortal kombat on a daily basis, the ps2 era more or less went under the radar even in the gaming crowd. I would have to give the edge to 9, because it sort of came out of no where and breathed life into what was becoming a dead franchise that had seen it's best years long ago. No one could have imagined such a great love letter to the fan base would be made and it was just perfect for anyone who grew up loving the series. Holds a special place in my heart as it was made with a lot of love and care.
There are things and bits and pieces I like from x and forward, but I also feel like this is where the series lost some of it's identity and when the fanbase became toxic and starting in fighting with itself, where prior to 10 mortal kombat had the chilliest and most fun fan base around. To me when you say the words mortal kombat, most people are going to think of the original three games and 9 if they were still gaming and got to experience mortal kombat's renaissance.
