could someone explain how close fatalities work?

so some context because obviously i do not own MK1 but i am playing MK11 to scratch that itch that MK1 trailer gave me(also economically can not afford) but thats besides the point.

i'm trying to perform close fatalities but how close should i stand because i am standing like an inch infront of my opponent i input "stage fatality" fatality from kotal kahn and it always results in him just punching the opponent.

like how fast should the inputs be, how close is "close"?
and i even went into fatality training modeand i suffer from the same issue there, i can't find that one spot to stand in for the close fatalities to go off on.

mid fatalities are much easier and mor forgiving imo to perform so it's not a skill issue, it's more that i lack critical information about positioning and the speed of inputs!

It is explained in the game and also the area where you have to stand is displayed, in menu under Learn >Training >Tutorial > go to Fatalities, there you can practice Fatalities for time or unlimited.

i already explained that i have the same problem there. it might the speed of my inputs. how fast should i do the inputs?

For example> Forward>Back>Down X . I press normally without stress, so I'm completely chilled. so don't make the inputs hastily, rather calmly and precisely
