I love MK, but coming back to this game was a worse experience than ANY GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED. It just became more prevalent with Invasions, where apparently they made the AI difficulty higher, because the enemies are so much more perfect at everything compared to before
I feel with every update, change, whatever they do to this game, they keep taking steps back and they don't care
Go make Shaolin Monks 2 or a Action RPG like God of War set in the MK Universe.
Go make Injustice 3.
But they need to give MK as a fighting game a break for a good 5+ years.
Personally I hate the new lore. It spits on multiple loved characters, even Scorpion, who's the face of the franchise.
He's not even Scorpion anymore, but a random homeless boy. Add insult to injury they have Sub-Zero marrying his wife, who'll likely have his kid too.
What I was hoping this game was going to be back in 1992 like MK9 did. Yes it's repeating the same story sure, but it's better than MK1's story.
They changed so much that the characters don't feel the same. Raiden is younger, reptile has scorpion's backstory now, Shao Kahn isn't even Shao Kahn now, Tanya is a disgrace to what she's supposed to be, I can go on.
As a game however, it was decent-ish. I've played it a lot, but only to level up characters, I've skipped a lot of content because I simply don't care for it. It has a lot less content than MK11 too.
The customisation is garbage, you can't even make sets of gear pieces and skins anymore and it's completely randomised if you choose it. The customisation is utterly pointless in this game in it's state that's clearly not changing.
Invasions is literally just Super Mario for Mortal Kombat. You stand on a node, beat the level, and move to the next node, identical to Mario games.
What they need is to remake the original games. Give the original games modern graphics with updated gameplay and features with a complete 1:1 telling of the original story.
In modern MK we've only gotten the rebooted version of the story which is Extremely different from the original story.
For example, Kitana and Mileena grew up together in the original story before learning Mileena was a clone. In MK9 retconned it and made it so that Mileena was born in 1992 and was immediately an enemy to Kitana.
I can say with 100% confidence, MK fans would love a modern day remake of the first 3 games with modern gameplay and graphics with the very original story in tact.
The story was stupid and the DLC story made Zero sense.
The game had features no one asked for nor wanted and they didn't even execute it correctly anyway.
Half the characters' faces are ugly or just not attractive anymore. Including the rest of their designs. Not all of them of course, but some designs I have no idea why they were green lit.
Stupid trends like every single female character has to be in heels for some reason.
The lore is terrible.
Changing too much for no reason at all.
Changing the backstory of a character is one thing, but completely changing who they are and what they're supposed to be is plain character assassination.
Scorpion and Tanya suffer from it the most.
Scorpion isn't even Scorpion any more but a random homeless boy, which Sub-Zero impersonating him, marrying his wife and likely to have his child to rub salt in the wound. A spit to the literal face of the franchise.
Tanya is supposed to be the Starscream of the Mortal Kombat universe. She's smart and very capable, but she's extremely ambitious and selfish. She'd do anything to survive, including letting allies die. They kept pushing her relationship with Mileena in this game, they briefly did it in MK11 with Mileena's ladder ending and some dialogues, and it was hinted at in MKX.
It doesn't fit her character at all, plus Mileena herself wouldn't want a relationship anyway.
Reptile literally has the Real Scorpion's backstory copied and pasted onto him for some reason.
Shao Kahn is no longer a huge threat, but a jobber now. Even in the original games and story where he was defeated twice he was still a big threat in the later games. MK9 did a great job with making him appear like the big bad. But now he's a whimpering dog whining about what to do.
Mileena and Kitana aren't pretty anymore. I'm sorry but they messed up with whatever tech they used to get the likeness of the woman they used. She looks lovely in real life but it didn't translate well in game.
Mileena is plain stupid in this new lore. It doesn't reveal how she became infected with the Tarhkat disease, but the whole family is keeping it a secret, which not only does it put them at risk, but the ENTIRE kingdom and civilisations of Outworld if it spreads that far.
Making Mileena the older sister was very dumb to me too. Kitana is supposed to be the older sister. In both the rebooted universe and the original one, Kitana is older.
However in the original universe from memory, Kitana and Mileena grew up together as children without knowing Mileena was a clone. In the reboot they cloned Kitana in 1992 for some reason. And in this new dumb lore they're legitimate sisters now. With Mileena being born first. Stupid.
Also I hate the design of Mileena's mouth. It's unique and different, sure. But not for the best. MK11 definitely had the best design for Mileena's mouth and teeth.
Goro suffers the same problem Shao Kahn does. From being one of the most difficult enemies of the good guys in the original games, he's now a jobber to play off as a gag.
Radien being young isn't horrible, I actually liked how they personalised him as a pure human. He's taken Liu Kang's role but he's still different. And I do like the call back to his amulet from MK9 being the source of his power this time. A nice touch.
Nitara. I don't think I need to say anything about Nitara to get my point across.
Geras was a nice character in this game but he was used simply to push the plot forward and nothing else. He just conveniently had the answer to Liu Kang's problem. near the end of the game, plus every time we saw him on screen, it was to remind us that there's another threat coming. Nothing else. He was useless in combat as well.
Havik was wasted, as was Ashrah, they appeared, then disappeared.
Baraka used to be a proud warrior of his kind, now a withering man who's lost everything, literally waiting to die. They diminished the Tarkatan race to a disease to remind you.
Rain did little to nothing other than be a bad guy in one or maybe two scenes.
Li Mei was decent, but her design is terrible and it was very obvious she was innocent from the punishment she was getting from a failure she didn't do.
Having Bi-Han in game again is nice but was wasted to immediately turn into Noob Saibot in the DLC story without even dying first.
Sektor and Cyrax have never been worse than what they are now.
Their designs are horrible, turning them into women serves no purpose to their story or development, no longer men becoming cyborg assassins but Ironman rejects.
Guest characters are awesome as always but Ghostface needed to be in MKX or 11. T-1000 was cool but should have been in MK11, Conan is cool, Omni-Man and Homelander are awesome but the hype died by the time they arrived.
Kameos sucked. Point Blank.
Invasions was literally Super Mario with a Mortal Kombat skin on top of it.
You stand on a node, beat the level, and move to the next node. Literally Super Mario.
WB & NRS literally spat on this Franchise.
They focused too much on making new features, modes and lore that they completely ignored who and what the characters and stories are meant to be and what made Mortal Kombat fun.
With every game up until MK11, the characters were hot, the stories were simple and easy to follow yet fun, ridiculous hit or miss modes like Puzzle Kombat and Chess Kombat, pretty sure there was a Mario Kart ripoff as well.
When NRS rebooted Mortal Kombat, they picked up right where the last game left off.
Every NRS MK game is essentially a "What If...?" story because of the changed lore from MK9, basically every single game after Mortal Kombat 3 never happened. Instead, MKX & MK11 took roughly 7-8 games' place. You can argue MKX is the retelling of MK4.
But MK1 is their excuse to change everything for literally no reason. They could have given us a remade 1992 game. Or make brand new game of the very first MK Tournament with the Great Kung Lao in game as example.
What Mortal Kombat needs is to completely retcon MK1. It's literally become the equivalent of the sequel trilogy of Star Wars. The story and remade lore is not good. I didn't enjoy it. MK11's story wasn't amazing either but at least it was enjoyable.
They need to remake the original 3 games with modern graphics and gameplay. And DON'T CHANGE THE ORIGINAL STORY AND LORE!
Go back to what made Mortal Kombat engaging and fun, and improve it.
All they need to do, at least for now, is exactly how the Resident Evil franchise is being handled. Remake every game while simultaneously plan out your latest story.
Since they started remaking every game in that franchise it's popularity has sky rocketed. People who have never played the older games are playing the remade versions and are loving it. While they made the first few remade games, they released the 8th game in their franchise, which was also loved.
Mortal Kombat can literally do the same and Succeed.
Mortal Kombat needs to bring back attractive characters, including their outfits, both men and women.
They've claimed they don't want to be inappropriate with their outfits back when MK11 was still having content released, but that makes no sense. It's a R rated video game franchise. You don't need to cover characters up. We're not asking for nudity or sexual content, that's gross. We're asking for attractive looking characters and skins. That's it. If you have to make outfits a little revealing, by all means.
They need to make customisation an option, not a reason to keep playing.
MK11 and MK1 have a lot of focus on unlocking cosmetic gear pieces and nothing more. Why?
Customisation for characters is fun, don't get me wrong, but we need proper skins like MKX and every other Mortal Kombat game with alternate skins has done. To me at least it's more fun to just pick a full outfit then go through individual pieces of a outfit.
At least MK11 let you save a full outfit to keep using, which MK1 doesn't.
Don't make up a random new mode that's clearly not fun, whoever play tested Invasions mode and said it's good, either didn't care or outright purposely sabotaged NRS. Or they're just plain dumb. Focus purely on story and modes the MK games have had in the past that were loved like Konquest mode for example. Or make a Shaolin Monks remake, not a remaster, a remake.
WB and NRS have all of these games to base their new projects on, yet they completely ignore them. It's very clear they're ignoring them because they're changing and retconning so much lore from both the original and rebooted stories.
MK9, MKX & MK11 were good. Great even. MKX is what introduced me into the franchise and I've been a huge fan since. But I hate the direction this franchise is going.
This isn't about being "woke". That word has lost meaning with how much it's used.
It's about sticking to the source material and staying to what Makes Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat.
I have no doubt the next game will be much worse than MK1 as they draw further and further from the original story and characters, Mortal Kombat is becoming a rejected MCU with making a unwanted multiverse for the franchise. Mortal Kombat doesn't need a multiverse. That's stupid and takes away from the stakes.
As a big Mortal Kombat fan of ten years now, I can safely say, Mortal Kombat isn't as big as it once was. And it's very obvious why. Too many micro transactions and crappy story telling and content.
Make Mortal Kombat Fun and Loyal to the Original Story.
I can appreciate someone who understands the issues with using "woke" today.
Tbh I thought the story and DLC lore were interesting. Yeah of course it dips into multiverse stuff like everything now, but I still thought the story was a unique take
The lore for the characters being different is allowed to work. This isn't the same timeline in 9, or in X/11. This is a new timeline. I think it's fine that Kuai Liang is Scorpion in this story, I think it's fine that Sindel isn't evil (and I actually liked this spin), etc. The lore doesn't need to be the same every time, because it just gets repetitive. Some things with the lore I don't care for, but that's really it
I also don't really care for the "characters aren't hot" take at all because that's not what's interesting. I think the designs are cool, and that's what matters to me. Baraka looks more vicious to me, Mileena looks more deranged, for my first time seeing Ashrah, I thought she was pretty cool. I might be in the minority of thinking the designs aren't bad, but that's just me then
Invasions is largely what ruined the game's experience for me. It just doesn't need to exist in any capacity. Levels/stats just make the game bloated with mechanics (and it makes some enemies like Havik/Nitara absolutely annoying to fight later on). Just giving bosses super armor on everything, rapid AoE damage from standing next to them, and giving them unfair moves does not make the fight more interesting, it makes it suck. I also despise how the Towers of Time are latched onto it and not a separate thing, which should've never happened
Overall I see most of your points, disagree on some, but that's what opinions are for. Unfortunately for NRS, most of the opinions about MK1 are bad, but that's just how it flies
