I think we all just wanted a better MK11
I really hope that with the next MK that they are working on to go back to basics aka a return to MK9-10 style. By that I do not mean to be exactly like them but to have some of its gameplay elements such as 2 bar breaker and 3 bar X Ray and to be as easy to play as MK1 but not that slow
I thi k they should go back to their roots and start doing daring things like they used to. Would also help if they stopped the multiverse crap and stop uglyfying their characters for the sake of "MuH ReAlIsM"
Fact is , it failed towards MK11 and likely shareholder projections. It only sold 4 Million copies while MK11 sold over 15 million. That is what NRS gets for pushing monetization schemes rather than focusing on the things that matter. Also, it should be obvious that people are sick and tired of the multidimensional chimpout at this point, yet NRS is appearantly too creatively bankrupt to think of something else.
Ed Boon himself not went radio silent and hides in bluesky now, so he doesn't face the critism on X.
On that front I think most players will agree. NRS isn't going to see another 3 million sales in the first three months again even if the game is excellent and especially under WB's current supervision
In 4 years it won't sell as much as MK11 did unless they revamp the game
Then, take it ALL the way back....no X rays, no combo breakers, just jump and jump attacks, high punch, high kick, low punch, low kick, foot sweep, spin kick, uppercut, throws, and power moves, and fatalities.
