The truth is Mortal Kombat 1 has 1,400 concurrent players right now and if you split the playerbase in just two regions (EU, US) you get 700 players for each queue. How many of those players are playing story or waiting in the lobby? Minimum 200. If you want a normal experience without having to play people across the continent with 200 ping you are left with only 500 players and most of them are sweaty veterans.
I'm enjoying Tekken 8 it is a 10/10 game and it is actually popular 48,000 concurrent players right now. You can enjoy playing Mortal Kombat with your 500 players left.
Tekken on PC is always very popular due to the better handling of 3D graphics than console. Possibly the biggest Tekken player base is on PC at 48k,
For MK1 the biggest player base is definitely PS5, some sources numbered the average active player base around 200k give or take, another 100k on xbox. Crossplay is coming in a month or two. So none of this will even matter.
MK1 sold on name and hype in the beginning, but the game has no staying power. SF6 and Tekken 8 has content to keep people engaged for a long time. They also work and don't have major issues. One of the greatest PR for Tekken 8 was having server issues Day 1 and fixing that problem in less, than a day. Also active communication from both companies, unlike NRS.
While I imagine MK sold a lot of copies at launch, it will be easily outsold by Tekken 8 and SF6 in a long run. Name can only carry you so far, especially when the game has nothing to offer. Player retention shows that already. If player number are already dropping to the point it can barely hold 2k in less than 6 months, that means sales have slowed down significantly and there is not enough new blood to boost the numbers. In the meantime SF6 keep a healthy population of 20k players. Both Tekken 8 and SF6, have also surpassed peak player numbers of MK1. Of course you could say, that a lot of people play MK on consoles, but that also applies to SF and Tekken. MK population surpassing SF or Tekken is mathematically impossible at this point.
Basically it means, MK1 just let out all of its gas at the starting line, but has nothing left in the tank for the long run. And unless they pull a miracle and introduce some content that will justify the 70$ price tag, they will keep bleeding people. Which means if less people are playing, there is less incentive for other people to buy it. Especially when they have other alternatives with better price to content ratio.
What I am trying to say, is that all statistics and WB current miserable financial report says that your statement "This time SF6 got a 6 months head start and looks like sales has already died off. " has no grounds and was pulled out of your a$$.
Not sure what you mean by this. If SF6 sold at the same continuous pace since its launch MK1 would never be able to catchup. MK1 reached more units in a shorter time. In fact Eventhub calculated that MK1 has already 2x the SF6 units sold at this point.

Ok let me explain in very simple terms.
MK1 won the short game. Because of the popularity/legacy the name carries. Not because the game itself is good. But the explosive sale period is over. It will keep dropping and dropping and dropping. And with the current MK1 reputation it will drop faster and faster.
SF6 and Tekken, won't drop as fast and with each new update, it will bring in even more people. So while these games cannot compete in the explosive starting sales, they will definitely surpass MK1 in a LONG RUN.
Unless MK1 will bring in some actual content. If the content will be just some story expansion or additional characters, then people won't care.
EVEN more simple terms.
MK1 uses its name to make money, but by itself has nothing to offer. Short term gains.
SF6/Tekken 8 aren't as well known to casual audience (MK target audience), but now they are making a name for themselves as MK has nothing to offer to that audience. So while migration of people won't be instant, it is happening and it will keep growing.
If MK1 won't offer anything good within the next 2 months, not even its name will save it, as it will be overshadowed by both SF6/Tekken 8.
Simple Economics 101.
I don't think you understand. When I am in kasual versus, just purposely denying the matches.... I wanted to see how many people I can be potentially matched up to. Every 5 secs is like a new player joining MK1. In all my years at MK11 I have never seen that even at the height of MK11 activities.
At this point, you're either a NRS shill, or straight up fool to play MK1 over any other recent fighting game. The game is awful in every way.
Which this game clearly doesn't have.
Saying the same thing everyone has said before: more sales don't mean that the quality of the product is good. (Because is not)
MK has only 1k.
Actually the average is closer to 20k. If you check their peak daily numbers. MK1 daily peak is around 2k.
