I would call it a sidegrade. It has both pros and cons over MK11. I'm enjoying it though. Though I admit I am not someone who plays online. I just enjoy the story and getting the "arcade" endings. I'm not really feeling Invasion though. Personally, I would have preferred a return to a Konquest style game mode. The worlds they created are beautiful and I would have loved to be able to freely run around in them.
-30 FPS capped animations
-4 Hour Story Mode (Shortest MK EVER)
-Poor performance for a lot of systems with Mid range hardware
-No Krypt
-Tedious and Boring Invasions (Super armor, Annoying and boring minigames, Empty maps)
-NRS doubling down on making sure they keep gradually reducing the attractiveness of -female characters
-No Real online Lobbies
-No Practice while waiting for a match
-Throws are too strong (Having to guess back throw or forward throw with a specific button -press is dumb af in a game like this)
-Kameo system doesn't have any flair or flavor, No voice lines, No interactions with other -characters or other Kameos, essentially just mute emotionless mannequins/sidekicks
-No point or incentive to do towers at all
Worst MK we've ever gotten and I've played every single one Since MK vs. DC.
The bare bones of the game is amazing (combat and character design) but everything else is severely lacking. We lost so much from MK11 and MKX.
- Intros are almost nonexistent. They actually are nonexistent in towers. Otherwise it's one line each, which very boring and I know we skip these after playing the game for over a year, but I miss them and it's an important thing for casuals who make up the majority of the playerbase.
- No training mode while searching for a match or while in king of the hill. This seems like a major oversight
- No crossplay. It's 2023, not 2018. Crossplay is standard now. SF6 has it. There's no reason for this game shouldn't. People get to play with their console friends, and queue times are decreased. It's a win for everyone.
- Cannot pin moves on screen.
- Character tutorials are gone.
- A lot of the character data they provide us with seems to be missing or incorrect as well.
- The Krypt is gone.
Netcode is also actively pushing people away from playing the game currently. Most people are finishing the story, then leaving.
That's not even mentioning optimization issues. Reasonable people have a tolerance with new releases and MK1 has far surpassed that. The black screen bug is unacceptable, and I know most people aren't at a level where the player 1 advantage bug will make a difference, but the tournament scene is big for this game. They took a huge hit to their reputation and the faith people have in this game by letting something like that slip through the cracks. It's just emblematic of how half-baked everything feels.
Maybe this is just me, but I also feel like invasion is such a step down from what we had in MK11 and MKX. It's a cool concept, but the implementation is awful. Nobody is going to play it once they stop using it to gain XP for their favorite characters.
Story is subjective, and truthfully I haven't finished it yet but I'm more than halfway through and I'm not impressed. Fighting game stories don't have to be like Naughty Dog or Rockstar level of quality for me, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't still a let down all things considered. I loved the concept of Tarkat being a disease and many of the character resets are interesting like Mileena and Kitana being true sisters, Reptile no longer being loyal to Shang Tsung, and so on.
So much potential, but it's missing that bite in my opinion. There's almost no humor in MK1 besides maybe some corny things Johnny says, and even that feels outdated or missing comedic timing at most parts of the game. The timeline reset created a lot of vanilla good guy characters that they can't seem to write differently.
Everyone feels the same besides Johnny. It's really difficult to distinguish them personality wise because they flattened all the characters. I miss Kitana and Sindel's playful arrogance and Mileena's teasing. Similarly Kung Lao was pretty funny in MKX, and he lost a bit of that in MK11 (truthfully almost everyone did), and that's also a shame considering he gets a bigger role in this game.
Sounds like a skill issue tbh
Dont forget the cage boss where he just gains stacks any time you hit him with the superarmour aswell.... then the ai will just spam force kicks and pin you down if you dont have any way of escaping
also character turorials are still somewhat there, its just kombo strings at the bottom of the tutorial page, called lessons, or something
