Population wars - MK1 vs MK11 vs SF6
Right now the population for each game is as follows:

MK1 - 6100
MK11-5500
SF6 - 5800

Jeez SF6 died fast, it was up in the 20K range like a week ago. Mk1 has died as well it was in the 15K range and has fallen to 6K.

Steam charts count crossplay users. So a SF6 player playing against a PS5 player counts as 2 instead of 1. That is how SF6 inflated their numbers.

i think the average gamer buying a fighting game are just super casual players and arent looking to get good which is why this mostly happens to fighting games. After the brand new feel wears off they'll just move onto the next game whatever that is.

These are all old discussions from years back. Steam had old methods of calculating player count from your profile. But if your profile were private or offline you always count as 0. For newer games the calculations were different like server count methods. Except the servers never distinguish between PC or non PC players. So servers that included crossplay were always skewed.

Every fighting game drops 70% of its player base in the first few months. Casuals don't stick around all that long. That's why they get you to pay for DLC before the game comes out because most people will quit before they would otherwise buy it.

The "population" numbers do not tell us:
- what modes people are playing
- whether the game is even being played (as distinct from AFK or running in the background after being shut down -- something SF6 notoriously did)
- where they are being played (MK1 / MK11 would be 90% in the U. S.)

Everything has to be "dying" or "dead" these days. Just play and enjoy yourselves. Who cares what player count is slightly higher or not.

None of that matters as 99% of the playerbases are all on PS/XBox.

What is with Steam discussion posts and their weird obsession with population numbers/concurrent player count. Genuinely who cares? Unless the fg is something relatively obscure like uni you're gonna find matches regardless of whatever the player numbers are.
RickSanchez Oct 23, 2023 @ 10:50pm
Casual numbers are completely irrelevant. all that matters is the dedicated player base in two months. Already a bunch of casuals have finished storyline and tried online play then go "game too hard". uninstall.

Furthermore to compare fighting games on steam is borderline asinine thought process. Do a touch a research, see what platform hosts all competitive tournaments on fighting games OTHER then Smashbros.. :O oh wow is playstation... Theres not a emote to show the amount of /facepalm this deserves.

You didnt know it because its not true. Steam charts pulls data from the steam API which does not get any data from capcom sony or microsoft servers.

This guys just lying.

Dude, really?
Mortal Kombat 11

• 6,981  players right now

• 10,366  24-hour peak

Street Fighter 6

• 16,551 players right now

• 20,201 24-hour peak

Mortal Kombat 1

• 2,688 players right now

• 6,817 24-hour peak

MK1 is the only one dying right now. Even MK11 surpassed it.

Anyone can just search Steam charts or Steamdb.info
