I’m not a scientist or a game developer, but I am pretty stupid… so I think that qualifies me to speak definitively on the concept of “fun.”
with proper meter management keeping 3 bars is pretty easy imo.
Overall...no idea I'm not that good at fighting games but I remember social media hating MK11 for not having a system like this...relentlessly.
Yeah this was true. One of the most hated aspects of MK11 was the many ways the losing player could drop out of combos, wake up with an invincible attack to turn the tide, and how sometimes the person comboing could be punished because their opponent broke out of a combo, that they were still recovering from.
I personally have no problem with the current breaker system and I hated MK11's system. The bar in MK1 builds up fast enough to compensate for using 3 whole bars of meter for breakers imo.
The problem is that the combo-centricity of the game is overbearing, and the only way to fix it now is to either make comboes more execution-heavy -- something they won't do for an abjectly casual fighting game that is aimed squarely at causal players -- or to make breaking cost less -- another tact they likely won't take because of the aforementioned reasons.
However, if they leave the game as is, it's already dead as anything resembling a competitive fighting game -- the comboes are that obnoxious; and coupled with the 50-50 guessing game "meta", very few will stick with this online... To say nada of the awful net code.
Thus, NRS have stuck themselves between a rock and hard place... My bet is that they will just continue to play deaf, distract people with DLC's (with DLC development, they're likely too busy to go back and overhaul the fighting engine anyway), and then provide some token assurances after Evo 2024 (which will be a farce), and never fulfil them. Then, the game will be abandoned by mid-2025 (the latest).
Yes... Because the character being pummeled gets awarded meter for losing... LMAO! It's the dumbest thing I've seen in fighting games since it became a trope. If you're getting beaten, you should not be rewarded for it. They already have comeback crutches, like Fatal Blows -- to also lavish meter on the loser, is to render any competitive aspect of the game null and void.
Games that do this, are "Rocky fighters": The more you get beat up, the stronger you get 🤪
Also the whole point of a comeback mechanic, is to give you a chance to come back, not just be steamrolled for the whole round.
And the recent CEOtaku MK1 tourney for reference, was lit!
For someone with a Shao Khan Avatar you sure to take any chance you can get to trash on MK lol.
Also unless your playing old 90s early 2000s fighters your going to be playing a fighter that has casual comeback mechanics PERIOD and MK is not the only one. SF6 has it with the universal drive system and modern controls, Strive has it with the corner wall break system and overall simplified gameplay, Tekken has it with the Rage (now heat) system and armored move system.
Your not playing a modern fighting game if your not rewarded for playing dumb or stupid. The difference is I find some fun (like MK1) and I find other trash (like MK11). So instead of just saying the MK series has this issue, why not admit ALL modern fighters have brain dead dumbed down mechanics to tailor to casual players?
Its clear you have some negative bias towards MK other wise you would not have a MK avatar while taking trash about the games at every chance you get lol.
