I've tried pressing back, down, forward, and then RB from 2 to 3 steps back and have regularly had no success. What am I doing wrong?

You're doing it too close, mid is a lot further away than you'd think.

I want to say you're in sweep distance which is too close, if you can sweep em back up a bit and you should be good to pull it off

2-3 steps is close range. and you need to be at a medium range, which is 2-3 steps from the opposite side of the screen.
just practice in the 'Learn" section
