They didn't go back in time, and it's not even a reboot.

If you understood the story, there was finally a tournament winner who was awarded with godhood and allowed to create his own universe.

All past events still happened, but this is now a new universe run by the new god.

So no, they didn't reboot, it's just now a multiverse.

Because it is just 1/11 of what MK11 was.

Because the entire timeline got reset at the end of MK11 and a new universe was created with with a few differences to try and make sure history doesn't just repeat itself. So now we're back to MK1. Its like a weird pseudo reboot of the series. If you're thinking about picking it up, theres a youtube video that explains the story up to now. With the ending of the last game being particularly important.
