Her background story is basically the same. Her new design is also much better since she is not fully purified. In Mortal Kombat: Deception she was not fully purified despite her design assuming her to be... also I imagine that adding small details was kind of harder back then so they didn't even tried with the demon side of things in her design.

In the trailer there is a 1 sec image of what looks to be Ashrah wearing the hat. So that gives me hope she has retained her original design.
EDIT: i looked at the trailer again and the hat that ashrah wears at the festival is red and not white and gold like it should be,bit of a shame really. maybe we will still get the white hat tho.
That Li mei DA bell bottom costume is way too revealing by today's standard. It'll never make it in.
It's one of those things where you try to create a multiverse-like scenario to "restart" the franchise. It gets pretty bad because now you set the narrative where if the story goes stupid, just redo everything. It just loses it's.....identity of what it was. I'm not liking the kameo system as well. Just an easy cash grab to me as ppl already gotten sold by the "superheroes". I'm still calling it, that those kameos will be so broken because why wouldn't they. Easy money in my eyes. Wait til they get a certain threshold then nerf the hell out of it.
Its the crisis on infinity earths effect, and well, MK have been DC-fied a lot on previous games.
Maybe it can be a running thing for sometime, when things are getting stale they go CRISIS again to reshape and restart
But, just thinking about it,as those franchises (fighthing games, i mean) are getting old they will have to do something to keep it, at the same time, familiar and fresh. It must be a hard trick to pull out cause fans will always be attached to classic chars and replacing them is very risk, as we had seem with X and the kombat kids, that i believe, were intented to replace the classic roster on future instalments
So, maybe the CRISIS can be a necessary evil
